Hi, I’m Josh Hoffman. I’m an experienced and professional tutor, specializing in math and science, with nine years of experience as an educator and tutor. I worked for tutoring businesses for six years (2016-2022) and try to emulate the quality of their research-based curricula. I have spent the last six years working in schools, including my current role in special education. I have an M.S.Ed. in Middle Level Mathematics Education from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. I have experience successfully supporting the growth of students of various races, socioeconomic backgrounds, abilities and disabilities (including ADHD, autism, Down Syndrome, dyslexia, and NVLD), comfort levels, and ages (from preschool through college) in a variety of subjects.

In addition to Math, I have academic backgrounds in Environmental Studies and Creative Writing. While I specialize in math and science, I am also formally trained to support students’ growth in reading, writing, and social studies skills should families want my help in that department. I am also fluent in Spanish, which may be helpful if a student speaks Spanish as a first language or would like support in learning it as a second language. I can design a math catch-up curriculum, using state and national standards as well as my experience working for tutoring businesses with their own curricula. I can also tutor for the ACT, SAT, and Praxis. (I may require a student or their family to purchase a test prep book for ACT or SAT prep.)

My job as a tutor is to figure out where a student is at—their strengths and weaknesses alike—and work up from there. I am patient and committed to helping a student get to a state of competence and confidence. I teach with a version of the Socratic method and make sure that students are thinking for themselves and truly understanding, not just receiving knowledge from me—lighting a fire, not filling a bucket. I regularly, rigorously, and warmly check for understanding and modify my teaching accordingly.

I am a special education paraprofessional at a middle school, where one of the primary students I support has ADHD, as do others I support. In graduate school, I took a course on Teaching Diverse Learners, half of which was devoted to special education, one lesson of which was devoted to ADHD. I got an A- in that course. I have ADHD myself and am intimately familiar with the obstacles it presents to learning and how to either circumvent those obstacles or use ADHD traits as assets.

Knowledgeable and Patient

Josh has been teaching my daughter for the past few months, and we couldn’t be happier with the progress she’s made. He is patient, knowledgeable, and truly dedicated to his students’ success. When we first started, my daughter was struggling with Precalculus, but with Josh’s clear explanations and guidance, she began to understand the material. His teaching not only improved her skills but also built her confidence to the point where she chose to move on to Calculus. Josh also supported her with SAT preparation, always taking the time to answer her questions thoroughly. We are deeply grateful for his help and highly recommend him to anyone looking for an excellent math tutor.

Kind, Knowledgeable, Communicative and Prepared

Josh is great! He is a calm presence, making math less daunting to our ten-year-old son. He arrives prepared with a clear agenda and explains concepts in a way my son can understand. We appreciate him!

Very patient and organized

Josh tutors me with SAT Reading. I struggle with reading and writing. He teaches me strategies and assigns homework that helps me master the subject. He records the session so I can review it if need to.

great calculus tutor

My son was struggling with college calculus. The tutoring center on campus was unable to help him understand the work but Josh was able to break it down and has been extremely helpful.

Great First Impression

Josh was wonderful to meet. As first time parents who have no experience with tutoring, Josh exceeded our expectations! He spoke to our little girl like a grownup, completely eliminated the distracting “little kid approach” and she had a flipping BLAST! We cannot wait for our next session!

Knowledgeable and patient

After the first session, Joshua was able to hone in on the areas my son needed to improve on and developed a strategy to help him do better in math. He provides thoughtful and comprehensive feedback after the sessions.

very knowledgeable, organized, experienced tutor

My 6th grade son had two sessions with Josh so far. I can see he is a great tutor to get ahead in math. My son really likes him how he is smart, skilled, calm, organized. He explained the concepts in a clear and understandable way. Since my son had some experiences with other tutors in the past, he can say who is really good and fit well with him and want to continue working with him for a ling time. After sessions, Josh sent a summary of session very detailed so I can see where is my son at and what he learned and what area my son needs to work more. His detailed feedback also very helpful to see my son’s progress.
