I'm Professor Jim. I have a PhD in Computer Science focusing on programming languages and compilers. My career has included both software development in industry and teaching computer science at the college level. I have experience teaching most of the core undergraduate curriculum (Java programming, data structures, software engineering, etc) in addition to several upper level courses, including Compiler Design and Theory of Computation. I also designed a course in Web Application Design and taught it for many years. I've found that being able to leverage practical, real world experience in my college courses has been a big plus.
I've received two teaching awards, one selected by my department and one selected by my students. A former department chair described me as a "utility player", an instructor who can teach just about any subject.
In my experience, the most effective learning (in a university setting) occurs during office hours, where I can interact one on one with my students - the same environment as in a tutoring session. My basic approach is to first find out what my student needs to know, from a single problem to a whole unit, and then work through problems together, explaining the material as we go along.
I am happy to answer any questions you might have to determine if scheduling a tutoring session would be useful to you.
