I have always been a lover of language. An early affinity for reading led to a confidence in writing that I honed at the Lawrenceville School, from which I graduated with High Honors. In college, I studied Spanish, Japanese, and Music and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania.

I enjoyed trying my hand at journalism at the Philadelphia Weekly as a fact-checking editor and contributing Arts and Entertainment writer. Later, I worked at Thought Incorporated, tutoring middle school, high school, and college students, and creating new reading and writing curricula. I taught reading comprehension skills, grammar, and how to write winning application essays for college and graduate school. **It's application season now, so please reach out if you would like help with those essays!**

More recently, I have expanded my clientele to include adult professionals who need help improving their business writing skills, including resumes and cover letters. I get great satisfaction from encouraging people to learn who may have thought they were past the “academic stage” of their lives. Everyone deserves the opportunity to communicate their ideas through well-chosen words.

I also spend a good amount of time volunteering with Mighty Writers in Philadelphia, as a mentor and writing tutor for children in underserved communities. I happily work to fulfill the mission of the organization: teach kids to think clearly and write with clarity.

I believe that expressing oneself in written form is an invaluable life skill, no matter what one’s age or where one’s interests lie.

I thoroughly enjoy helping students discover their written voice to tell the stories only they can tell. I have proven methods of crafting the ideal college essay and grad school personal statement, from the brainstorming process for the main essay, through to polishing each supplemental essay. I know what admissions committees want to hear, and how best to convey that to them through the written word. I can also help to edit and polish essay drafts, if students are already on the road to apply.
English

English

My English language skills have always been strong, and a Magna Cum Laude degree in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania only corroborates that fact. I discovered my love for teaching as a TA in college, and now have years of experience tutoring one-on-one in academic writing, reading comprehension, grammar, college essays, graduate school personal statements, resumes and cover letters. I also have volunteer experience with Mighty Writers, happily working to help improve the language skills of children in underserved communities. I strive to instill in each one of my students the invaluable and lifelong skill of writing well.

Literature

Literature

I love literature, especially being able to share it with others. As a tutor and curriculum generator, I have created curricula based around novels from Roald Dahl to Tolkein and other great writers in between. The curricula cover reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition and academic writing. I enjoy reading books alongside my students to help them understand all of the great literary techniques employed so they can uncover their love of literature too, and when we end up with a nice 5-paragraph academic essay at the end, all the better!
Reading

Reading

I love language, teaching it especially, and am a tutor with experience working with children one-on-one with their reading skills. I volunteer for a literacy organization called Mighty Writers in Philadelphia, and sadly, many of the kids in the program are reading below grade level. I now have experience working with children at various reading levels, including those who are starting from the very beginning. I have materials, including multiple book series that have proven successful, that I could use to work with your son. I have found that my studies in linguistics at UPenn have actually informed my teaching of phonics, so I can explain why letters make the sounds they do when put into different combinations. Amazing writing tutor for graduate school and MBA

Rachel is an incredible writing tutor and has in-depth knowledge about what college admissions committees are looking for. I applied to several MBA programs in round two, and only had two to three weeks to get my essays done. Rachel was very flexible in the hours we could meet up and helped me draft my personal statements from brainstorming, an initial draft, to the final draft to send to graduate programs. She was exceptional at identifying my personal strengths and helping me craft a story around my profile. As MBA programs are looking for well-rounded applicants, she truly brought out the best parts in my story and highlighted them to the admissions committee. It's only been a week since I turned in my applications for round two and I've already gotten interview requests-- those schools are T15 and do invite-only interviews. Without Rachel, I would not have been nearly as confident in my essays. If you're looking for someone to start your essays from scratch and take you all the way to the finish line-- reach out to Rachel, she'll help you get it done!
