ADHD

ADHD

My first teaching job was in a school that specifically serviced special needs students. Each teacher received special training on how to aide students with a variety of differences, including ADD and ADHD. There and since I have worked with several students with ADD and ADHD both in their math content areas and with executive skills to help them succeed in all areas of their life.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

My degree is from RPI in Theoretical Mathematics, and thus included taking Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations as well as Linear Algebra a variety of other courses that require the use of differential equations. I have worked with students on many courses which applies differential equations as well as tutoring the course itself. I enjoy helping students identify the easiest path to a solution and the steps they should employ to get there.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

My degree is from RPI in Theoretical Mathematics, and thus included taking Discrete Mathematics as well as a variety of other proof-writing courses (Number Theory, Graph Theory, and Markov Chains to name a few). I absolutely love writing proofs and thinking problems out abstractly. I favor the Socratic Method of teaching, asking questions of the student to help him/her find her/his own way through the problem rather than telling what the next step is. This way the student not only learns how to solve a specific proof, but ways to approach proofs that will work on problems the student has never seen before.
Praxis

Praxis

I have tutored test taking for many tests, including the Praxis many times. I received a perfect score on the math section of the Praxis I, and scored in the upper 170s for reading and writing. I also received the ETS award for excellence on the Praxis II.
Visual Basic

Visual Basic

I have taken several classes in computer science and have written programs in both C++ and VB. Most notably, I wrote a scheduling program for the school that I work at, first in C++ and then rewrote it in VB with Excel so that we could use forms to make the program more user friendly. I have also tutored computer science courses and courses that required algorithm or code writing several times.
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

I currently sing Sop.1 in PVOP. I teach reading music in both treble and bass clefs, time and key signatures. I also teach Solfege (Do, Re Mi..) and intervals to help with correct pitch. I use IPA to teach correct pronunciation of foreign language lyrics (particularly Latin). I have a portable keyboard to bring to lessons and music if the student doesn't have their own selections that they wish to learn.

Wow! Excellent Tutor for a Challenging Math Class!

We finally found Jem for my son who is taking Advanced Statistics at a private school in the area. We went through four or five tutors until we found someone who was capable of helping him in this challenging class. Right away, my son knew she was the one who could help him. She was clear and efficient in the way she explained this very tough subject in addition to having a very nice and kindly way about her. As a result of Jem's tutoring and of course my son's hard work, as well, he is going to surely pass this class and hopefully get an A, which is now within the realm of possibility. He brought home a 98 on a test just last week and had the top score in his class. He will also take the Advanced Placement test for Statistics and we expect he will do very well on that, thanks to Jem's outstanding abilities as a tutor.

Knowledgeable and on-target with class subject matter and interaction

Jem's experience enabled her to very quickly evaluate and assess my son's deficiencies and help him. He feels more confident with the subject matter since working with Jem.

I highly recommend Jem. She is an engaged, organized, and extremely well-versed tutor in all levels of math.

Jem tutored me for a Quantum Physics course, and helped me become confident working the mathematics involved with the course. She was very organized and was genuinely interested in the material. Jem helped me both with the simple task of parsing through algebraic mistakes and with the harder challenge of grappling the more advanced mathematical concepts needed in the course, including advanced integration, partial differential equations (PDEs), and Fourier transformations.

The Best Tutor

Jem C. has been tutoring my son in Honors Algebra II and Honors Chemistry for a few months. She is a truly excellent teacher in both subjects. She is engaging, focused and patient and makes sure he understands the concepts well. My son really likes working with her. In addition she has been extremely accommodating about fitting in extra, pre-exam sessions and getting here reliably, even during the frequent snow storms we’ve had this winter. We have tried a number of other tutors, but Jem has been the best by far.

Excellent Math Tutor

Jem is currently tutoring my high school sophomore in Algebra 2. My son was having extreme difficulty learning the material by the "College Prep Math" curriculum in use at his school. Jem was extremely knowledgeable and worked effectively with him. Her explanations were straightforward and clear: presented in a way that made it easy for my son to follow. She provided practice problems both in the sessions and via email. His confidence definitely improved after being tutored, and his grades also showed improvement. I plan to hire Jem as a tutor again for his next math class.

Great tutor with results.

I went to Jem in order to get help for the Praxis: Math Content exam. She was very patient and explained the math concepts in concise, easy to remember ways. She was very encouraging and truly wanted me to succeed. I had taken this test before but fell short on my score. After meeting with Jem, my score went up fifteen points and I passed!

Wonderful!

Just one word describes Jem, WONDERFUL. That's Jem, wonderful! She tutored me in Calculus I twice a week and I passed!!! I know for a fact that without her I would have failed. She didn't just show me the correct answers to the many math problems, she asked a lot of leading questions to pull the answers out of me. I have no qualms about taking Calculus II.

Outstanding with difficult material!

My daughter is a math major, so the material she is covering in her Number Theory class is extremely difficult. Her grades and standing in this class have improved tremendously since working with Jem as well as her mastery of the material.
