I'm Stephanie, a patient and fun teaching artist and certified art teacher with more than 25 years of experience. I'd love to be your guide as you learn to translate what you see into the pages of your sketchbook! I've taught numerous classes in drawing from observation, which I'd recommend for ages 11+, and ANYONE can learn to draw, even those who say "I can't draw." I'm Stephanie, a patient and fun teaching artist and certified art teacher with more than 25 years of experience. I'd love to be your guide as you learn to translate what you see into the pages of your sketchbook! I've taught numerous classes in drawing from observation, which I'd recommend for ages 11+, and ANYONE can learn to draw, even those who say "I can't draw." I have the most to offer those who are newer on this journey, as we will be really grounding you in the basics. Observational skill is fundamental to most art forms, and helps you more carefully notice the world around you.
I have worked with ages 5-adult of all skill levels in many settings, including:
-23 years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
-my own art classroom in a high school
-residencies at public schools and senior centers
-libraries and museums
-homeschool groups
-private tutoring
During Zoom calls, I have one camera on my face and another on my hands so you can both see me talk and observe the techniques while I demonstrate. During a typical session I'll demonstrate and you'll practice, with my feedback (ideally, you will point your camera towards your hands to allow me to observe and comment on your work).
I'll suggest assignments for you to do and send to me in between sessions, since practice is essential! I will reply with a video in which I'll digitally mark your drawing and point out things you might not have noticed - I'm the extra pair of eyes you need to help you develop!
A grounding in drawing basics would take a good 12 weeks, using simple art materials, primarily pencil. Later, we can consider using other media, like pen and ink, and colored pencils or crayons.
Should we plan to meet, I'll ask you to do pre-instructional drawings both to gauge where you are, and for you to have as a record of progress.
Please reach out to me to discuss how I might help you or your child! I have worked with beginning students in a variety of media - and as a book artist, I can teach you some very simple bookmaki
