Bio

I'm Stephanie, a patient and fun teaching artist and certified art teacher with more than 25 years of experience. I'd love to be your guide as you learn to translate what you see into the pages of your sketchbook! I've taught numerous classes in drawing from observation, which I'd recommend for ages 11+, and ANYONE can learn to draw, even those who say "I can't draw." I'm Stephanie, a patient and fun teaching artist and certified art teacher with more than 25 years of experience. I'd love to be your guide as you learn to translate what you see into the pages of your sketchbook! I've taught numerous classes in drawing from observation, which I'd recommend for ages 11+, and ANYONE can learn to draw, even those who say "I can't draw." I have the most to offer those who are newer on this journey, as we will be really grounding you in the basics. Observational skill is fundamental to most art forms, and helps you more carefully notice the world around you.

I have worked with ages 5-adult of all skill levels in many settings, including:
-23 years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
-my own art classroom in a high school
-residencies at public schools and senior centers
-libraries and museums
-homeschool groups
-private tutoring

During Zoom calls, I have one camera on my face and another on my hands so you can both see me talk and observe the techniques while I demonstrate. During a typical session I'll demonstrate and you'll practice, with my feedback (ideally, you will point your camera towards your hands to allow me to observe and comment on your work).

I'll suggest assignments for you to do and send to me in between sessions, since practice is essential! I will reply with a video in which I'll digitally mark your drawing and point out things you might not have noticed - I'm the extra pair of eyes you need to help you develop!

A grounding in drawing basics would take a good 12 weeks, using simple art materials, primarily pencil. Later, we can consider using other media, like pen and ink, and colored pencils or crayons.

Should we plan to meet, I'll ask you to do pre-instructional drawings both to gauge where you are, and for you to have as a record of progress.

Please reach out to me to discuss how I might help you or your child! I have worked with beginning students in a variety of media - and as a book artist, I can teach you some very simple bookmaki

Are you a beginner or novice artist looking to build your skill in drawing from observation? Look no further! I'd love to be your guide along that road as you learn to translate what you see in life to the pages of your sketchbook. Anyone can learn to draw from observation - even those starting from scratch! It's all about building perceptual skills, and I will teach you to SEE differently, which is the foundation from which all else builds. I started learning life drawing skills at age 11, which gave me the tools I needed to start developing my own style. I went on to get my BFA in illustration, and eventually my Masters in Art Education from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. As a teaching artist & certified art teacher with more than 25 years of experience, I delight in sharing those same techniques with beginner artists or slightly more experienced artists who need a boost in their observational skills. I've taught numerous classes in drawing from observation, which I'd generally recommend for ages 11 and up. I'm a thorough, patient and good-natured guide, and I'd love to help shepherd you through this skill-building journey! With most artists, the journey begins with pencil, but if we continue beyond the basics, we can expand to other media like charcoal, ink and collage later on.
