My name is Brett, and I am a 2019 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I earned a B.S. in Conservation Biology and a B.A. in Philosophy. While at IUP I was employed by the university as an Algebra TA and as a calculus and philosophy tutor for over 4 years. Although much of my work was through the university, I also conducted private tutoring with a large number of students. While I primarily provided these services for compensation, I had and would never turn away a student because of their inability to pay for tutoring. Some 25% of my pupils were in such a situation, and the tutoring they received was as first-class as any other student received. Most of my pupils have been college-age, but I have taken on students as young as 13 in the course of my mathematics tutoring.
A few years ago, I enrolled in a community college and then transferred to the University of Pittsburgh to study Biochemistry. Along the way, I became well-acquainted with organic chemistry and assumed the role of tutor for my class section. Every one of the students whose tutoring I took charge of received a grade they were proud of, and I was happy to do so. It goes without saying that I was able to excel in my own study of organic chemistry, and I am excited to share this with new pupils. This is a challenging and intimidating course, but with a little help most anyone can succeed in this fundamental topic.
My methods are a healthy mixture of formal and informal, but always respecting the sanctity of the tutor-pupil relationship as a professional one. Having had such a diverse range of academic studies, the tutoring I provide draws inspiration from other disciplines for suitable analogies and applications. One central tenet I stand by is that all teaching should always incorporate the practical and real-world considerations of any subject. In doing so, I hope to pre-empt and evade the question of, "When am I going to use this in real life?" I look forward to working with you!
