Bio

I'm Elias - I am a state-certified (OR) teacher and have been working as an educator for over 15 years. I have mostly work at the high school and university level, but have experience with young students as well. I am also trained in working with students special needs. I am a certified SAT/ACT/GRE instructor, and am also a certified college prep counselor!

In addition I am also a very experienced writing educator/coach (my past work experience includes being an editor for a small publishing company). So from research papers to college admissions essays, I'm your guy!

I take pride in and enjoy the challenge of bringing a light-hearted, yet focused and goal-oriented approach with my students - especially those struggling to find the joy in classes that not everyone might enjoy...

My teaching methodology is built around a 1-1 individual style carefully catered to each student, working to improving confidence in the best way for to learn the material - for them specifically. I helpe my students to discover their own learning styles, find and leverage strengths, build confidence, and let go of self-criticism in areas of difficulty.

I am currently working towards my Masters in Education and have experience in education ranging from public school classrooms to one-on-one tutoring. I have been tutoring algebra and geometry for over 5 years. I have had roughly 25 private students now in these subjects and am very comfortable and confident with the material. I enjoy these subjects because I find that with the right instructor, the material can make sense quite easily! I enjoy the challenge of taking a subject like math and helping my students to succeed - once a student realizes their potential in a subject like math, doors start to open up all around and their confidence grows greatly.

I have over 10 years of both in-class and one-on-one experience teaching both Algebra 1 and 2. It is one of my favorite subjects to teach as I enjoy taking this kind of complex material and making it easily digestible for students to comprehend.
Chemistry

I have over 10 years of experience teaching chemistry to high school and university students, both in public and private school classrooms and one-on-one. I have a Masters in Education from PSU with a credential to teach high school chemistry, and it is easily my favorite subject to help students with! I have lesson plans, worksheets, and methods to aid in my private lessons.

After years of University and Graduate school, I have learned a great deal about writing formally and what is expected for students in terms of their English reading and writing abilities. I am also an avid reader, mostly of the classics, but I also stay up to date on multiple fields of research, so I am well versed in speaking both about literature and analyzing texts. I have a lot of experience working with High school and University students in English writing and reading.

As a pre-med undergrad, I took honors Organic Chemistry for three terms and got straight A's. I was also a part-time workshop instructor for the subject.
Psychology

I have a double degree (BS) in Psychology and General Science. This actually demonstrates the fact that after I finished my BS in Psychology and Minor in chemistry, I spent two years working in Neuroscience - as a paid teacher's assistant at Portland State U and also as a research assistant in an MRI neuroscience lab at OHSU medical school in Portland, Oregon. As far as Psychology goes, I have exemplary grades in the subject and have a great deal of experience working with students in the field as well as some experience working in the actual field as well. Psychology in general includes a great deal of work in Statistics and problem solving, areas that I am very comfortable teaching.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have been working as an SAT prep tutor for about 3 years and have learned a great deal that relates especially to the math portion of the SAT. Because the subject matter is really quite basic for most advanced high school students, the real rigor of doing well on the math portion of the SAT comes down to working on problem solving techniques and working on test-taking techniques. Not only do I have exemplary grades in math from my own education, I have also been tutoring math for about 3 years with great results. The thing that qualifies me for SAT prep is the fact that I have experience and knowledge relating to working with these levels of math in a standardized test and test-prep setting.

I have numerous years of experience teaching in the subject of writing, as well as many years of graduate and undergraduate writing experience. My writing has won awards from various academic institutions as well as helped me win numerous scholarships. I have helped many students attain similar success in their writing endeavors and I always enjoy working with students in this subject.
