Hi, my name is Mike!

During the school year I work for a nonprofit that supports students with learning, attention, and behavior challenges, but since I have the summer off I thought I'd reactivate my Wyzant profile!

During the school year, I mostly focus on reading mentoring with the assistive technology my work uses, but I'm also confident in writing for students in k-8th grade and math for students in k-5th grade. I used to work as a paraeducator for the various school districts in the area.

I got a perfect score on the Praxis paraprofessional exam, as well as a Platinum/perfect score on the WorkKeys/National Career Readiness Certificate exam. These certificates are required by the districts to work as a paraeducator; with them I am considered "highly qualified" to work in any classified position.

I can tutor in most any elementary level topic, including reading, math, and writing. I also feel confident tutoring in basic computer skills, as I taught classes at my public library on computer literacy topics such as email, web browsing, windows 10, search engines, etc.

I try to be pretty forgiving in my policies, but I do need several hours of notice (like at least 4 at the very minimum) prior to cancelling an in-person tutoring appointment. This is simply because I take the bus and wouldn't want to be already on my way to you on the bus only to have to turn around and go home. For online appointments I really only need 2 hours' notice. I charge $30/hr for both online and in person tutoring, but if you live far away and I have to come to you on the bus I charge a $5 hourly transportation differential to cover the cost of bus fare. For example, if you live in Washington State, or Canby, or Yamhill County, I would have to pay extra bus fare on top of what my transit pass covers, so the differential covers that.

I'm an open book, so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me! I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved Subjects

Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Prior to covid, I spent 6 years working with students of all abilities teaching math and various other subjects. When I worked at Woodmere Elementary, I would lead small math groups and provide one on one help to students who needed it.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I'm so excited about science, it's always been my favorite subject personally. I've always found it easy to get kids engaged in science content. I love that science reveals so much about how kids' brains work just by what they come up with and how they process what's happening. There has definitely been more than one occasion where a student has proposed a solution to a problem that never occurred to me, and cultivating and encouraging that engineering mindset that often times is so natural in kids is extremely important to me as an educator.
English

English

I was a paraeducator working with students of all ages and abilities for many years prior to covid. I provided support to both general Ed and special Ed, to both native and nonnative speakers.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I've worked extensively with students of all ages learning English as an additional language for ten years now. Currently, I'm a reading mentor working with students that struggle with learning, attention, and behavior challenges.
General Computer

General Computer

I teach technology literacy classes for my local library on topics such as basic computer skills, internet skills, word processing, and Google's suite of products and services.
Grammar

Grammar

I've worked for many years with kids who speak English as a second language and feel comfortable teaching grammar to both child and adult students
Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

Multnomah County Library has classes for patrons to take on a number of subjects, including Microsoft Windows. I teach some of those classes and really love doing it. Usually it's older (50+) folks that take them, but not always. I think I'm patient and understanding and try to teach students about all the ways their computer can be made more accessible for them with high contrast, larger text, etc.
Reading

I'm a paraeducator for Portland public schools and regularly do reading groups with students to improve fluency, pronunciation, and comprehension. I also have experience in working with students with reading challenges such as dyslexia.

Patient and helpful tutor!

Michael is very knowledgeable about PPS and the surrounding area school systems so he is able to understand my frustrations and pick right up where my child’s lessons left off. He is also wonderful at suggesting learning aids and incentives to make class/homework go more smoothly for my child. He is very thoughtful, calm and patient when giving a lesson!
