Bio

I am a conservation biologist with a love of teaching. I was a teaching assistant for two years in graduate school, taught for two years at summer camps, and I just can't get enough of it! I live for the moment when a student 'gets' a concept and their eyes light up with understanding.

As a student myself I started in genetics and botany, and expanded my education into ecology. I have a master's degree in tropical conservation biology and environmental science, and I also write practice...

I have a master's degree in tropical conservation biology and environmental science, and I also write practice questions for the AP Environmental Science exam.

I have been tutoring statistics both formally and informally for over two years. I am patient and I thoroughly understand statistic principles. I will explain them in as many ways as is necessary for a student to understand!

My tutoring specialty is math, especially algebra, from middle schoolers just starting to high schoolers who need help with the concepts.

I currently have a very flexible schedule as I am freelance right now. I am in school myself to become an FAA certified drone pilot, so that limits hours on some days.

Approved Subjects

Botany

Botany

One of my undergraduate concentrations was botany. In graduate school, I spent three years researching the ecological distribution of Metrosideros polymorpha on the Big Island of Hawai'i, which required identification of the four subtypes and a great deal of field work. I also spent two years as a teaching assistant for Sustainable Agriculture, and was partially hired for my botanical expertise. Gardening, wildflower and plant hikes, and visiting botanical gardens are all hobbies of mine, and I regularly read and reread botanical identification books for fun.
Genetics

Genetics

I wrote my undergraduate thesis on the use of ISSR (a pre-microsatellite) technique, which I used in a lab because I didn't have access to any sequencing technology. The choice was well-researched and informed even though ISSR is a little archaic as a genetic technique. In graduate school I was trained in various other bioinformatic techniques, both wet and dry; this consists of the lab techniques (DNA cleaning, various marking techniques, various sequencing approaches) and analysis techniques (the uses of different programs to analyze DNA output). I am well versed in the basics of genetics and am very comfortable teaching them.
