PCC/PNCA (Fine Art)
With over 40 years as an art director and graphic designer, of which the last 20 have been working with Apple and PC computers. I've worked my career from the bottom up, learning from some of the best mentors and professionals in their respective fields of what it takes to make great, award winning designs, which also conform to the realities of production and implementation of the final product.
It is with this philosophy and experience, which I wish to share with others. To help a new generation of artist and designers understand the full potential of the tools they will use to create world-class works of art for themselves and future clients and employers.
One of the biggest challenges I'm met with when I mentor designers and artist early in their careers, is the lack of understanding of how to use their design and Illustration software efficiently. The importance and use built-in shortcuts, the use of tables, setting up style sheets, creating and importing color pallets, automatic page numbering, creating master pages, and etc. And most importantly, avoiding time consuming and costly mistakes when it comes to the printed page.
These are critical areas for any aspiring artist or designer to master, if they wish to succeed in their career.
My many years working for large and small agencies, in-house marketing and communications departments has allowed me to work on almost every type of project for a graphic designer. I will show you how to create a color pallet for a project, typography that supports both the printed and digital page, where to get free stock images and illustrations. How to work with layers and color correction in Photoshop, the art of masking and composite. The difference between RGB and CMYK and when to use the two.
I want to share the skills and knowledge I've learned, much as my mentors freely shared their skills and knowledge with me, to the next generation of artists and graphic designers. I received my initial InDesign training from IrisInk while working at a large insurance company in Portland when we moved away from QuarkXpress in 2004. For the last seven years, I have been responsible for mentoring junior and freelance designers on best practices in the use of InDesign. This includes the use of style sheets for both text and object boxes, keyboard shortcuts, creating and editing tables, creating PDFs for printing and the web, importing text and images, exporting page or pages as JPEGs, creating and editing hyperlinks and more.
I have been working with Adobe Photoshop since 1995 and have attended multiple Adobe workshops since then to keep abreast of the latest features. I use Photoshop daily in my professional occupation, I also have been responsible for photographing company events, editing and retouching photos, color correction and branding of images for large international and national companies.
