I have taught students ages 10 to 75 to explore their musical imagination by combining lessons on Bass and/or Guitar with composition, theory, and songwriting/production.

Students learn to play everything from the Grateful Dead to Thelonious Monk, from Imagine Dragons to Giveon, from Beethoven to Queen.

My students have gone on to attend Jazz at Lincoln Center High School Jazz Academy and win scholarships to Berklee and Manhattan School of Music. To keep my students motivated and inspired for the long term, I create customized practice plans for each individual.

I've worked with Grammy award-winning and Tony nominated, multi-platinum artists as a performer, teacher and consultant. I use all my professional experience in my teaching to ignite a passion for learning and music in my students.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I have been composing music for small jazz band, rock ensembles, music for TV production and multiple horn arrangements for 13 years. I usually show a beginner student a template for a short song (8 bars or so) and then have them make small choices, such as which of two chords to put in, or which note to put in a melody.
Ear Training

Ear Training

I am a graduate of Manhattan School of Music, where I completed several years of Ear Training. I work with students on identifying chord changes, intervals, and applying music theory to ear training. I have perfect pitch, and have a number of tools to work on ear training, including backing tracks and sheet music.
General Music

General Music

I am a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, with a degree in Jazz Bass Performance. At the school, I also learned how to play piano, and I have been playing guitar since age 7. For my students, I focus on fundamentals: playing their instrument with proper technique (making sure student is sitting properly on piano bench with fingers curved/making sure thumb is flat against the back of the guitar neck etc.), learning how to read music, and music theory basics. I often transcribe songs that students like, and teach them how to read the written melodies and chords.
Guitar

Guitar

I have been teaching guitar and bass guitar since 2011, to children and adults. For guitar, I use the Alfred Basic Guitar book to introduce a young student to reading music and basic technique. I try and introduce chords early on; for older students, I try to introduce popular songs earlier, with an emphasis on reading chords and written melodies. My method for teaching bass is similar, I teach how to read basslines and melodies of the same song.
Music History

Music History

I am a professional musician and teacher in NYC. I have a degree from Manhattan School of Music, where I took classical, jazz and popular music history. I have experience teaching music history as it relates to specific instruments, such as piano, guitar or bass, as well as generally.
Music Production

Music Production

I have composed with Logic and other DAW's to make music for commercial broadcast, and recorded professional-level tracks in my studio. I have taught how to record, mix and master audio to student groups, who then recorded and mixed their own album.
Piano

Piano

I have taught Piano in New York and the tri-state area since 2013, at schools in New Canaan CT, Pelham NY, and Staten Island. I teach mostly beginner and intermediate children, although I have taught adults as well. For children, I usually teach using both the Alfred and Bastien series, helping them learn the basics of how to read music and play with proper technique. For more advanced students, I transcribe or find arrangements for classical, jazz, and pop songs that they like and teach them how to play it and the theory behind the music.
Songwriting

Songwriting

As a songwriter and composer, my original project The Jazz Thieves has performed at festivals and conferences throughout the US, including the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, and Musikfest. I have taught songwriting to my band classes, and they have written original songs and performed/recorded them.

Great Teacher That My Kids Enjoy Working With

John is teaching piano and guitar to my two daughters and they both enjoy working with him. Hi is patient, positive, and make each lesson fun. He clearly has mastery over both instruments but knows how to work with kids to make the lesson educational and age appropriate.

I learned so much in just an hour!

I shared my goals with John, and he had me making progress on them within the first hour! I thought it would take much longer to make any meaningful progress. I feel inspired and re-energized about practicing and playing music!
