Your studies do not have to be frustrating or boring! Whether you need extra support with your challenging courses, are looking to help your child build a strong English or Spanish foundation, or want to push yourself more to stand out on your college applications, I am ready to help! I have had a very successful academic career and understand what it takes to shine - and to tackle those problem areas! I am friendly, positive, organized and skilled at assessing individual needs.

I have learned Spanish as a second language, so I understand first-hand which topics are most difficult to master and have some great tools for conquering them. Additionally, I've lived in both Mexico and Spain, so I am bilingual and can teach from basic to the most complex grammar points. From my abroad experience, I can also incorporate cultural themes that breathe life and excitement into language acquisition.

I have wide experience with ESL students as well, from beginners to advanced and will help you reach your goals in a fun and comfortable environment. I also have had years of experience in intensive literature classes, so I am very familiar with the focus and tools you need to write beautifully and effectively.

We all want learning to be accessible and fun, and I am experienced in creating interactive activities and memory tricks to deepen recall, and increase motivation and confidence.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have experience teaching English in a Spanish high school in Spain and tutoring in a Chicago bilingual elementary school. I have worked as an in-home ESL tutor for native Burmese speakers, and I also served in an after-school ESL tutoring program for native Burmese and Arabic speakers (elementary school and middle school ages). In addition, I have experience as an in-home tutor for native Spanish speakers, both in preparation for official exams and for personal growth.
Grammar,

Grammar

I grew up fascinated by language and have always excelled at reading and written expression. I was in gifted language arts and English courses throughout my school years, and became more acutely aware of grammar rules through my study of Spanish, ironically enough. I actually enjoy working on the technical aspects of language, and enjoy empowering students to be confident and accurate communicators in oral and written expression.

Spanish

Spanish

I have studied Spanish for ten years, but more importantly, I have multiple immersion experiences that have taken the language off of paper and into real life. I believe that language learning can and should be fun and engaging, giving the learner real tools to communicate and not just memorize grammar. I graduated with my BA in Spanish and was awarded as the Outstanding Spanish Student. I am currently working on my MA in Spanish. As Spanish is my second language, I recognize and can help work through the difficulties of second language acquisition, particularly some of the difficulties English speakers get caught up in. I have had a large range of experience teaching Spanish to students of all different levels, goals, and abilities and love to help bring students to those lightbulb moments!

Reading,

Reading

I was a voracious reader since a young age and believe very strongly in the power of story and written language to connect us. It is my experience that finding a student's interests and passions is the key to improving their reading and LA confidence. I love to work together with my students to find what drives them and get to be a guide as they make all kinds of discoveries about their own capabilities, and love of learning. As someone who had two BA degrees and an MA in the humanities, reading had been fundamental to my academic career and I feel confident working with learners of all levels, from elementary age to the university level.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

As someone who is continually studying and who had academically vigorous high school and university experiences, I have learned first-hand a lot of the most useful study skills, and those that are time-wasters. I was in the top of my class in high school and the valedictorian of my college class, and through a lot of practice, have learned well what allows students to study efficiently and effectively in order to have maximum academic success. During recent experiences teaching English in Spain, I've honed my skills in communicating useful tools and habits for recall and comprehension.

Great for 1st year Spanish

Marie has been great in getting my high schooler engaged in learning spanish. she comes prepared to the lesson and is great and getting my son to engage in a curriculum that was not his first choice. I'm looking forward to a great year with Marie.

Recommendation For Marie R.

Marie is a caring teacher who loves what she does and takes the time to know her students. If you're seeking a tutor for your child, I highly recommend reaching out to her to understand her philosophy in getting to know how the student thinks, problem solve, and what their motivation is regarding learning. I highly recommend her if you're seeking a professional outside of school to assist with your child's needs.

Very good tutor

Marie tutored both my boys in Spanish throughout the school year. We will continue with her next year as well. She is punctual, communicative, and dependable. Both boys thought that she was an excellent tutor and extremely helpful to them. I highly recommend her.

Marie strengthness my English awareness just with her presence

I am working with Marie in several different aspects of English language. She is helping me with public speaking, writing skills, grammar and new vocabulary. We also talk about different topics on her country (US) and mine (Spain). The fact that she speaks perfect Spanish also helps her to point out common misperceptions every Spanish native speaker goes through when it comes to learn English.

Review for Marie R.

I cannot say enough good things about Marie. She is professional, very understanding, and patient. Always on time, prepared, and uses very helpful learning tools. She is also a stickler for detail in learning Spanish. She does not teach "just enough to get by Spanish".
