Hello, I'm Judah! I got my Bachelors in Mathematics and Physics from Reed College which is known for a unique curriculum and academic environment. Every professor and student has a veritable passion and curiosity. The passion at Reed made the work so much more fun and I always try to bring that energy to my instruction. A true curiosity in the instructor encourages students to ask questions.
I have over a year of experience doing research including my senior thesis at Reed, for which I had to teach myself a lot of very dense material. Despite the rigor of Reed's Math & Physics programs as well as their lack of grade inflation, I was able to get a 3.74 GPA in my major and a 3.85 GPA in my last 2 years. I was also commended for academic excellence my junior year, earning a 3.84 GPA while taking a full load of upper division math and physics courses the whole year.
I have over 2,500 hours of experience tutoring over the past 6 years, 3 years of which were one on one tutoring. I started as a junior in high school working at Mathnasium. I tutored students in the first grade all the way up to high school. I quickly fell in love with teaching. The process of understanding each student's perspective, guiding them through problems, and filling conceptual gaps is very satisfying to me. My teaching style developed further at Reed College but not just because I was a tutor. The math curriculum at Reed is entirely proof based, this was a huge adjustment for me but the focus on writing arguments has made me much better at putting difficult mathematical concepts into words in a clear and concise manner. I realized math is built on analogies between definitions and physical properties. Connections between the language of math and an appropriate mental image are the guiding light of solving math problems. Without these tools even the most gifted student won’t be able to find a way forward when they get stuck. My students get a conceptual understanding and the tools to connect it with the problems they need to solve.
