I've taught in all kinds of contexts. My first job was as a lifeguard and swimming instructor, where I taught all ages, from 5-year-olds to adults, the basics of swimming. In my high school chemistry class, my teacher, Ms. Armstrong, admitted that I did a better job teaching her class than she did, regularly directing students to my table when they couldn't figure out what was going on. I even assisted my class valedictorian in Chemistry. I had my greatest success in college, where I was known to everyone in my major as the person who could help you through something you didn't understand fastest in every CE class: Computer Organization, Computer Architecture, Python programming, C/C++ Programming, Transistor V-I Relations, and any kind of math. I was a TA for Digital Signal Processing (aka Signals and Systems). Under my watch, the class average on the second exam went from 75% to 85%.
I always try to prioritize letting my pupils feel like they arrived at the answer on their own. I like to ask leading questions, and I'm always excited to see the light turn on in someone's eyes as they figure something out for the first time. Some people don't realize that communication during teaching doesn't go 1-way; as your tutor, I am constantly trying to figure out what your understanding of a subject is and how you think about it, so that I can express it in the language that suits you best. I live for the moment when one of my students suddenly realizes they have all the tools they need, launches into the problem, and comes up with the right answer.
