I tutor high school and college level students, specifically in the craft of the rhetorical essay. I earned my B.A. in Integrative Studies from Arizona State University and my Masters in Creative Writing (with a teaching certification in First Year Composition) from San Francisco State University. I taught First Year Comp, Critical Reading and Writing, and Literature at Berkeley City College and Composition at California College of the Arts. Prior to that, I was a dedicated, in-class tutor at College of Marin in Kentfield, CA. While pursuing my Masters, I mentored a small group of creative writing students, facilitating peer review workshops and assessing progress.
My approach to tutoring is student-centered. I prefer to meet the student where they are, to assess their strengths and weaknesses, and to help them understand that writing is a process, not only with the goal of producing a polished essay but of teaching themselves how to learn. Writing is not transcribing pre-formed thoughts but rather a self-guided learning process.
Recently, I have worked as a freelancer, writing academic study guides as well as essays and fiction. I prefer to tutor one-on-one, although there is value in working in small groups as well. I have taught college students and tutored developmental students at the community college level. Remote tutoring is the most practical format, but I am not averse to in-home work if you live within a reasonable distance. I look forward to working with you.
