I’ve been teaching and tutoring for nearly twenty years, challenging students to write with insight, clarity and style.

I hold a BA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing, and I’ve taught college-level literature and composition, as well as both fiction and poetry writing workshops. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with students in grades six through twelve through the internationally-acclaimed Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth's Online Writing Program. I’ve spent many years with gifted and twice-exceptional students, and am more than happy to work with nontraditional and adult learners as well.

I welcome all skill levels, from students seeking to build a stronger foundation in English grammar to those sharpening their essay-writing skills for high school or college. I specialize in targeting the skills needed for literary analysis, as well as for persuasive, research and personal essays, such as those required for competitive school admissions. I've deeply enjoyed working with students developing independent projects in fiction or poetry, and emphasize contemporary narrative techniques and close attention to language. My aim is to increase student confidence and to model writing as a means of exercising curiosity, critical thinking, self-reflection and vivid storytelling.

I work from home and can accommodate a variety of schedules. Sessions will be conducted online, and I’m available to meet with students once, twice or three times a week, on a short or long-term basis, depending on their goals.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved Subjects

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I completed a BA in English, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and with honors in the major, and an MFA in Creative Writing with a focus on poetry. Since 2007, I've taught college-level creative writing workshops in fiction, poetry and memoir writing, as well as courses on a wide variety of narrative techniques to middle and high school students through the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, always with a focus on providing individualized feedback tailored to each writer's needs. I've worked in freelance editorial roles as well, working closely with authors to develop and refine their manuscripts.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

For six years, I taught college-level freshmen composition courses focused on persuasive writing, research writing, and literary analysis. Through the Johns Hopkins Center for Talent Youth, which I joined in 2008, I've worked with students in grades six through twelve as they honed their skills in first-person writing, alongside more advanced essay forms. I've also tutored students developing personal statements for competitive school admissions, as well as those preparing for timed essays on standardized tests.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

I completed my BA in English with a focus in Creative Writing, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and with honors in the major, and was twice awarded a grant from my undergraduate institution to complete work on two of my own short story collections. For six years I taught writing workshops at the college level, challenging students not only to experiment with a variety of narrative styles and techniques, but also to become close critical readers of fiction, able to confidently identify and evaluate the strengths of other authors on the page. Since then, I've worked one-on-one with middle and high school students at all stages of the drafting process as they explore plot, character, and the many shapes a short story or novel may take.
