Teaching English and Literacy has been my life‘s work. With nearly 30 years of classroom and tutoring experience, I bring both passion and expertise to helping students succeed as readers, writers, and communicators. I hold a bachelors degree in English, a reading specialist endorsement, and was honored as Teacher of the Year in the Issaquah School District. I also served on the Governors Task Force on Writing, co-developing the nationally recognized Six Traits writing program and trained teachers across the Pacific Northwest. I hold additional certifications through the Bay Area Writing Project, CASEL (supporting students in social emotional learning) and the Socratic method.

I've taught and tutored students of all ages – from early readers, learning phonics, to middle schoolers, developing reading comprehension and writing voice, to high school and college students tackling essays, critical thinking, and advanced writing. I’ve worked extensively with students with dyslexia, ADHD and auditory processing challenges, using multisensory, structured methods to build phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency. Internationally, I was chosen to teach advanced high school students in Beijing how to write personal narrative essays – a form of writing not taught in Chinese schools, but essential for admission to top US universities. It was a high-pressure and high stakes program, but deeply rewarding: many of those students gained acceptance to prestigious, American universities, and continued working with me after their arrival
My tutoring style is encouraging, systematic, and tailored to each learner’s needs, always aiming to help students unlock text, find their voice, and discover a lifelong love of reading and writing.

Reading

I am a credentialed teacher with 20+ years of classroom and tutoring experience and a K–12 reading endorsement. I’ve taught English/Language Arts and reading in multiple states and completed training in evidence-based programs including Orton-Gillingham–based methods, Lindamood-Bell, and Wilson-style structured literacy. Drawing on this background, I’ve developed my own systematic, playful reading curriculum that has helped students move from struggling to decode to confidently reading aloud, comprehending, and even writing and “publishing” their own children’s books. Parents frequently share that, after working with me, their child is not only making measurable progress, but is actually excited for reading time.
