Currently, I attend Reed College in Portland and am majoring in Philosophy-Religion. I hope to get my PhD after undergrad and go on to teach at the university level in the future. My background in philosophy has given me an approach to teaching that I think is far too uncommon in today's school systems: I believe in a collaborative and supportive approach that emphasizes the learning process for its own sake. Kids should not feel pressured to get a certain score or meet a certain benchmark, rather, the act of learning itself is what should be encouraged. To this end, I try to bring out the best in anyone I work with, and adapt to their particular needs.
That said, I do recognize the role test scores play in education today and want to help students achieve their personal goals whatever those may be. In the past I have both prepared myself, and helped others to prepare for, the ACT and SAT. I scored a 35 on the English portion of the ACT and a 36 on the reading portion with a 34 composite. On the SAT I scored a 1420 total score with a 750 on the reading and writing portion. I feel confident in my ability to help other students improve their scores as well, if that's what they're seeking from tutoring.
