Literature

I have an MA in English literature with an emphasis on 20th century American literature, women writers, and multicultural comparative literature. I taught American literature and creative writing at Linfield College for eight years and ran a literary arts organization hosting celebrated authors for another four years. For the past 5 years I have helped AP and IB language arts students improve their academic reading skills, and up-level their literary analysis.

Public Speaking

I am an expert speaker ands skilled at training others how to speak with confidence and clarity in a variety of settings. As a college professor, I routinely gave lectures and made presentations to college students and colleagues. In my class, students learned how to craft a polished class presentation. As an environmental lobbyist, I learned to speak persuasively in front of state and national legislative committees, and I ran “lobby days” training volunteers to give brief presentations. I spoke at rallys and press conferences. I am also skilled at making conference panel presentations, running workshops, and giving guest lectures. I can teach you to present with poise, confidence, and skill.

Writing

I began coaching high school students through the college admissions process as a volunteer at my son’s high school and realized quickly that I had found my true calling. I studied extensively with Ethan Sawyer at the College Essay Guy and began using his techniques to develop my own college essay coaching style. For the past five years, I’ve worked as a college essay coach at several tutoring companies, helping students write powerful personal statements and inspired supplemental essays. I can also help with the California PIQ. Students I have mentored have gotten into a wide variety of great colleges, including: New York University, University of California, Berkeley, Northeastern University, University of Washington, Whitman College, Pomona College, and the Clark Honors College at University of Oregon. As a creative writer and an American literature professor, I can also help students with writing strong literary analysis or creative pieces.
