Hello! My name is Jacob. I have a Ph.D. in English from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and fifteen years of experience teaching writing and literature at the college level. I am passionate about preparing students for higher education and helping them to improve their performance in college courses. I have taught at UW-Madison, Texas A&M University, the University of South Florida, and Portland State University. Over the past three years, I’ve begun applying that experience to my work as a tutor, using my academic background and my curiosity, empathy, and care to guide students toward success in a university context.
Though I am open to working with any and all students, I am especially interested in helping STEM-minded students engage with humanities fields and courses. I have lots of experience teaching basic writing, technical writing, science writing, and literature to students specializing in fields ranging from computer science and engineering to physics, chemistry, and biology. Though modern universities tend to divide the sciences from the humanities, scholars have come to recognize that courses on literature and writing can have a profound impact on a student’s ability to communicate effectively, to read and interpret insightfully, and to think critically. I love showing students how the study of language and literature can enhance their understanding of all fields of knowledge. I know many students with talents in STEM courses have had challenging experiences in literature and writing courses. I have had great success supporting these students, helping them to confront the obstacles and anxieties that have held them back in the past and giving them access to the tools they need to excel on any academic or professional path.
Please feel free to get in touch for a free consultation! I'm eager to get to know students and their families, to collaborate on a shared set of tutoring goals, and to give you the chance to get to know me and my teaching philosophy.
