Hello! I'm Lucille. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Portland State University. My studies focused on topics in neuropsychology, as well as cognitive and clinical psychologies, such as the ways in which we process information, why and how we do the behaviors that we do, and how these processes can go awry in the case of a mental health disorder. I also learned about how we can influence these processes to cope and create positive change in our lives.
I previously worked for ten years as a Teaching Assistant, Substitute Teacher, and Nanny. I worked with middle-school aged children and below, and my knowledge in psychology helped me deliver fun and enriching activities and conversations suited to their developmental needs. I've also worked as a volunteer with a non-profit organization that merges art and neuroscience. Maybe you've heard of them! They're called Northwest Noggin, and their mission is to inspire at-risk middle- and high-school aged children to re-engage with their education. I've visited several schools with them to answer questions and do projects with the kids.
Regarding my tutoring approach, my overall goal is to empower students by helping them 'learn how to learn'. How to learn is not often explicitly taught but I believe that it’s foundational and catalytic to all other learning processes. With that said, my process includes delivery of information that's broken down into manageable chunks, clarification, and review through recall and repetition. I also like to guide them to the answers of their own questions when possible.
Specific to tutoring Executive Function skills, my goal is to help students build self-awareness, compassion, and creative problem-solving skills. This way, they can learn to trust and depend more on themselves, to regulate their own learning, and to communicate their struggles. I also introduce science-backed tools and strategies to accommodate their learning.
