I'm Henry S, and I'm the sole proprietor and tutor at Hyperion Tutoring. I have been tutoring in biology and chemistry since I was a junior in high school. I offer online tutoring in middle school to college level biology, chemistry, and mathematics. I graduated from Reed College in 2021 with a BA in Biology specializing in molecular biology. The majority of my career has been split between doing individualized and group tutoring and lab research.

I'm comfortable teaching all types of biology, chemistry, and math through the high school level, but if the student is in college we would need to discuss what classes they want tutoring for. In biology, I have experience in molecular biology, microbiology, evolutionary biology, developmental biology, and ecology. I can tutor college introductory chemistry and biochemistry. In mathematics, I've tutored students in algebra, pre-calculus, and trigonometry. I'm open to a number of different types of arrangements, but I usually suggest at least weekly tutoring as in my experience it results in the best reinforcement of the target concepts. Appointments run for at least one hour but can be longer depending on scheduling.

I'm also a published author in biology. With this experience in scientific communication and primary research, I'm happy to help science students with writing lab reports and conducting data analysis for classes or personal projects.

My teaching philosophy focuses on a two way relationship formed with the student. Depending upon what the student and I have decided to focus on for the session, I usually employ an adapted Socratic method which will allow the student to figure out answers independently and build critical thinking skills. Students at the middle, high school, and college levels are frequently switching scientific subjects either by the month or semester, and my broad knowledge base allows me to stay with a student and continue to build a relationship as they grow and progress.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I've tutored middle, high school, and college level students in algebra for more than five years at this point. I specialize in tutoring students having difficulties in mathematics due to factors like ADHD, dyslexia/dyscalculia, or a fear of math. I've taken and tutored calculus and trigonometry up to the college level, so I know what concepts are foundational in algebra for a student to succeed if they progress further into mathematics in their academic career.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I've tutored middle, high school, and college level students in algebra for more than five years at this point. I specialize in tutoring students having difficulties in mathematics due to factors like ADHD, dyslexia/dyscalculia, or a fear of math. I've taken and tutored calculus and trigonometry up to the college level, so I know what concepts are foundational in algebra for a student to succeed if they progress further into mathematics in their academic career.
Biochemistry

Biochemistry

I’ve taken three classes in biochemistry: structural biochemistry, metabolic biochemistry, and biochemical methods (focused on laboratory techniques and analysis). I’ve also done research on proteins involved in enzymatic degradation of plastics and proteins used during viral particle assembly. Finally, I have an in depth knowledge of molecular biology and the regulation of homeostasis and metabolism.
Biology

Biology

I majored in biology in college, and I took AP Biology in high school and got a 5 on the exam. I have spent the majority of my career doing biological laboratory research in addition to STEM tutoring. I'm currently an author on two publications in major biology journals, so I'm also happy to help with looking over papers or writing lab reports. I have hands on experience in microbiology and virology, cell biology, developmental biology, evolutionary biology, genetics, and biochemistry.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I took AP Chemistry in high school and received a 5 on the exam. I majored in biology in college which involves taking introductory chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. Additionally, I’ve performed research in nuclear and analytical chemistry.
Genetics

Genetics

I have conducted research in evolutionary biology and natural history that requires an in depth knowledge of genetics and inheritance. Additionally, I have published two papers that rely on genetics, studying mutations in insects and finding proteins in bacteria capable of degrading polymers through the comparison of bacterial genomes. I have taken college level courses in gene regulation, cellular biology, and microbiology which all require an understanding of genetics.
Microbiology

Microbiology

I conducted original research in microbiology for my senior thesis at Reed College in addition to getting an A in the microbiology course at the college. I’m also an author on a microbiological publication for my work on finding enzymes in bacteria capable of degrading PET. In addition, I have experience doing research in virology which is sometimes included in college microbiology classes.
