My initial training in UCLA's Graduate School of Education and Information Studies' Teacher Education Program was intended to prepare me to teach secondary (middle school and high school) math in a classroom setting. A change in career paths took me to a Spanish-speaking country, and that's how I began teaching online to maintain the professional relationships I had forged with students I taught in person while living in the States.

My goal is to prepare the student well, whether it be for academic success or for a trip abroad to an English or Spanish-speaking country. I myself am currently learning to speak Mandarin Chinese and can sympathize with language learners. With over ten years of experience tutoring online, I have facility with Zoom and with WyzAnt's excellent online tutoring platform, of which my favorite feature is their virtual online whiteboard that allows for document uploading and real-time interaction between tutor and student.

I still believe that in-person classes are more effective because there's nothing that beats face-to-face communication without audio/video problems or internet connectivity issues. But if you live in an area with fast, reliable internet, I would like to encourage you to please contact me if you are interested in online tutoring for your student as an affordable and effective aide to academic success.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I took one year of teacher training in UCLA's Graduate School of Education and Information Studies Teacher Education Program (TEP). Through TEP, I had the opportunity to teach mathematics in an LAUSD high school. My student teaching assignment happened to be for an Algebra 2 class. I have used manipulatives (tangible objects used as teaching tools) to teach students arithmetic and geometric series, and I even had a lesson plan employing earthquakes and their Richter scale magnitudes in order to teach and show a real-life application of logarithms. My goal was and still is to make math meaningful to students.
English

English

I specialize in teaching English to those whose mother tongue is not English. I have an upper-grade elementary school student from Korea right now who was learned to read, say simple sentences, build basic reading comprehension in 9 months. She started out very shy and with zero knowledge of English. I have many other young students and also have experience teaching adults conversational skills.
Phonics

Phonics

I spent a year in South Korea teaching phonics to students in grades 1, 4, and 5 of elementary school. When I first started teaching these students, the majority of them could not sing the alphabet song. I started at ground zero with them, and the upper grade children were able to phonetically sound out the words in simplified versions of Rumpelstiltskin and The Little Red Hen on their own within 10 months of receiving hour-long lessons twice a week. I would first teach them the letters of the alphabet and the sound that each letter makes. For letters like c and g, we'd stick with the 'hard' sounds (e.g. cat, goat) initially. With the vowels, I would teach them the name of the vowel and its corresponding 'short' sound. Then I would teach them consonant combinations such as bl, cl, sh, ph, ck. These would be followed by vowel combinations. I assigned students homework from workbooks.
Spanish

Spanish

I took four years of Spanish in middle and high school and scored an 800 on the Spanish SAT II. I'm by no means a native speaker, but spending over the last four years in Mexico has given me much insight into colloquial expressions, and I can now freely apply many grammar concepts that had always given me a hard time in high school. I feel that being a non-native Spanish speaker gives me an edge when it comes to teaching the language to native English speakers because I understand the struggle and have overcome the very same blocks your student may be facing now as a Spanish language learner.

Great teacher!

My daughter was feeling insecure about the topic she was covering for Math going into the lesson with Jennifer. She was not feeling confident about some of the questions she had in her test. After lesson with Jennifer, she perked up and excited about how Jennifer just taught her something useful and new. She’s excited to use the technique in her next assignment. Thank you Jennifer!!

Knowledgeable and Kind Tutor

Jennifer reviewed some grammatical concepts that I was having trouble with and went over questions I had gotten incorrect on a practice test. She was very kind and helped me feel good about taking the Spanish SAT.

Experienced and knowledgeable tutor

My daughter's first lesson with Jennifer was great. Jennifer is an experienced tutor who knows how to work with students. Jennifer first assessed my daughter's level of knowledge and understanding and she also asked her very specific questions in her assessment. That way she knows where to place her focus for the lesson. I'm very satisfied with the first lesson and I know Jennifer will help to straighten my daughter's math and logical skills.
