I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I entered Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA as an undergraduate. Therefore, along with earning a B.A. in History and French, I took the required education courses including completing a semester of student teaching for grades 7, 8, and 9 for both subjects to be licensed as a teacher in the state of Virginia.

After graduation, I accepted a management job opportunity at AT&T to write procedures and training courses for employees. The same skills and methods for teaching in public schools I applied to teaching adults using the "discovery learning" approach (also called "inquiry-based," "student-centered" and "problem-based" learning). Each class was introduced to the learning styles to each class to ensure that the design of the class would be compatible with the students' preferred learning styles.

Fortunately, AT&T paid for my post-graduate education. From George Washington University in D.C. I earned my Masters of Science degree with a major in Behavioral Science. Then from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL, I earned my Doctorate in Business Administration to directly apply new business knowledge to solve real-world problems for AT&T. (A PhD is another kind of doctorate for those seeking an academic career path.)

I was now qualified to teach undergraduate and graduate college business students. I chose to teach Marketing in the evenings and did so for 7 years at the University of Washington at both the Seattle and Tacoma campuses.

Then I shifted my focus back to teaching in public schools. I attained my Washington state teaching certificate and also returned to college to add middle school math and science to the list of subjects I was qualified and licensed to teach.

I have designed and delivered classroom course lessons in middle school, high school, college, and for a corporation (AT&T). With the advent of Zoom during COVID, I was able to shift to online tutoring to continue doing what I love.

Approved Subjects

COOP/HSPT

COOP/HSPT

During the past 5 years I tutored many students online for the HSPT/COOP totaling about 750 hours. Of the four high school entrance exams, this tests is most closely aligned with the middle school curriculum. What makes this test so challenging is the number of questions (238) allowing, on average, 25-40 seconds per question/problem. Shortcuts I taught helped students manage their time more efficiently,
ISEE

ISEE

For the past 5 years I have tutored students for at least 90 hours each year for all three ISEE tests. I advise parents that if the schools being applied to accept either the ISEE or SSAT, I recommend the ISEE since no points are deducted for a wrong answer. Both the ISEE and SSAT have lots of word problems which are challenging since students in public school do not get much of an opportunity to do such multi-step problems. Word problems are included because they test three skills: reading comprehension, math reasoning, and math calculation. The verbal skills section is also challenging since vocabulary is not usually taught in middle school.
SHSAT (NY HS admissions)

SHSAT (NY HS admissions)

This is the entrance exam for entering 8 of the 9 specialized high schools in New York City. Only the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts the specialized high school that does not use the SHSAT for admission. Since only residents of New York City can take this test, I usually tutor three or four students each year totaling only 10-12 tutoring hours each year. The SHSAT has two sections English Language Arts and Math. Each section has 57 questions.
