I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I entered Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA as an undergraduate. Therefore, along with earning a B.A. in History and French, I took the required education courses including completing a semester of student teaching for grades 7, 8, and 9 for both subjects to be licensed as a teacher in the state of Virginia.
After graduation, I accepted a management job opportunity at AT&T to write procedures and training courses for employees. The same skills and methods for teaching in public schools I applied to teaching adults using the "discovery learning" approach (also called "inquiry-based," "student-centered" and "problem-based" learning). Each class was introduced to the learning styles to each class to ensure that the design of the class would be compatible with the students' preferred learning styles.
Fortunately, AT&T paid for my post-graduate education. From George Washington University in D.C. I earned my Masters of Science degree with a major in Behavioral Science. Then from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL, I earned my Doctorate in Business Administration to directly apply new business knowledge to solve real-world problems for AT&T. (A PhD is another kind of doctorate for those seeking an academic career path.)
I was now qualified to teach undergraduate and graduate college business students. I chose to teach Marketing in the evenings and did so for 7 years at the University of Washington at both the Seattle and Tacoma campuses.
Then I shifted my focus back to teaching in public schools. I attained my Washington state teaching certificate and also returned to college to add middle school math and science to the list of subjects I was qualified and licensed to teach.
I have designed and delivered classroom course lessons in middle school, high school, college, and for a corporation (AT&T). With the advent of Zoom during COVID, I was able to shift to online tutoring to continue doing what I love.
