My first experience in tutoring began when I went to graduate school at San Francisco State University. To help pay my tuition, I worked for a Business School professor, grading papers for students whose first language wasn't English (ESL).
I helped these students learn the language I loved and they went on to have careers in business. My second experience in tutoring was when I worked as a copy editor for the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where I helped one of the young ESL doctors learn how to improve her English skills. For the seven years I worked at UCSF, I also taught a class to all the young doctors on how to become better writers.
I love helping people learn the English language. I am very patient. I enjoy working with students and they have always seemed to enjoy having me help them. I follow a lesson plan for each tutoring session, depending on the needs of the student, and I leave a handout at the end of the lesson. At the beginning of the following session, I test the student to see what they have retained.
I enjoy working with students. I have a BA in English and an MA in English literature, so I enjoy everything about the language. I helped young children (second grade) learn to read for two years in a school program and college students learn how to become better writers. I've worked as a copy editor (also known as a book editor) for over twenty years, helping authors make their writing the very best it can be.
I can be available from late morning to late afternoon, including weekends, for tutoring sessions. I can come to a student's home, they can come to my home, or we can work online.
I hope I can help you with all your English language needs in the near future.
