My day job is as a bioinformatics analyst at one of the world's top scientific research organizations, the Salk Institute, where I train and manage bench scientists and analysts, and do cutting-edge applied data science. My work is in discovering ways we can engineer crop plants to have bigger, deeper, and more resilient roots that take extra CO2 from the atmosphere and get it into the ground where it will enrich the soil and stay for a long time, having the fantastic side effect of slowing global warming.

I interpret large-scale genomic data sets such as those from single-cell RNA-, ATAC-, and ChIP-seq. I use computer programming to implement algorithms and statistical analyses, including machine learning, and integrate previous research to connect the data to biological insights that we can act on.

My academic training consists of a Bachelor of Science in Botany and a Master of Science in Biology. I've published multiple articles in high-impact peer-reviewed scientific journals, and taught ecology, evolution, and intro biology at CSU Fullerton. I spent a year developing deep learning models at a fish ecology research company, and worked as a field botanist for the USFS for five years, where I became an expert on the flora of Northern California.

I love everything plants and genetics and would love to teach you about them. I've tutored and mentored numerous people over the years, and I love helping people become skilled and confident while enjoying it!
