Academy of Art University - San Francisco (BFA Photography)
I am a professional commercial photographer with a passion for sharing my knowledge of photography, Adobe Photoshop and location/studio lighting. I first started tutoring while attending the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where I earned a BFA in Photography. I received many creative awards and was recognized as one of the top photographers in the university. As a professional, my work has been featured in numerous publications around the world. I've collaborated with advertising agencies on high profile client campaigns as well as worked with individual companies on branding. I am very skilled in advertising, commercial, photo-illustration, editorial, fashion, portrait and product/still life photography.
I have a long history of teaching/instructing that started at a young age while I was in the Marine Corps. The Corps sent me to three different military instructor trainer courses in which I learned the skills to be a successful teacher. Although the subjects of what I teach now has changed greatly, I still hold the basic core values of what I learned in the Marines very highly and often fall back on my training to help fellow creatives to be successful.
My approach to teaching is very simple. First, I like to get an idea of the level of knowledge and skill the individual I'm working with is at. I do this by asking questions and then I have them show me. This helps me to understand exactly where they're at and where we should start. Time is very valuable and I feel it is important not to waste it by covering topics that the student is already comfortable with. From there, I find out exactly what the student is seeking to learn about and I build a syllabus based on the individual student. I highly encourage note taking but I also provide handouts with detailed technical notes. I feel this is important because the subjects I cover are a bit overwhelming to most and the handouts I provide can be a valuable tool in the future. I like to focus on the individual and their strengths. This helps them to overcome any areas they may be not be strong in because it gives them the confidence to do so.
At the end of the day after all the technical topics are covered, my ultimate goal is to make it possible for the student to understand that this is art. There is no right way to do art and that learning the basics and technical aspects are only tools to help them take their creativity to the next level. I look forward to helping you achieve creative success! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been working in Photoshop now for twelve years and I love sharing my knowledge with other creatives. While earning my BFA in Photography, I often tutored my fellow students in Photoshop as well as assisted my professors during periods of instruction. As a professional photographer, I rely heavily on Photoshop to help my creative message become a visual reality. I really enjoy the look on a students face when they realize that anything is possible while exploring Photoshop as a creative tool.
