Hi! I am Dan and I can't wait to help you on your education journey! I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from UC Davis. I received my California Teaching Credential for high school Physical Science with an additional endorsement for Mathematics from California State University Sacramento. I'm currently licensed to teach Physics and Chemistry in Oregon. My tutoring experience includes all levels of science students from grade school through grad school. My goals for all of my students include helping them be successful, nurturing their natural curiosity about the world, and giving them an understanding in a deep and lasting way of the amazing scientific principles that are part of their curriculum and part of our universe. I have tutored dozens of college students in Physics 1 and 2 and I have taught thousands of high school students from many different backgrounds with different skills and challenges. My favorite classes to teach are Geology, Astronomy, and Physics. I have taught AP Physics since 2005 including AP Physics B, 1, and 2. Although my students are at a Title 1 school, they consistently beat national averages with their AP Physics scores. I have attended five AP Summer Institute programs in Physics and I am an official AP Reader who grades the AP Physics exams each year.

I enjoy triathlons, backpacking and traveling and camping with my family. I worked at the US Geological Survey during my college years and collaborated with members of the Lawrence Berkeley Labs Astrophysics Division with their research that led to the Nobel Prize winning discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe and Dark Energy. Today I am working with the Carlton Observatory Project to bring a community space education center with a planetarium and observatory to my community

If you would like some help with your science coursework, I will listen to you, work with you, and above all, never give up on you. We can do this! Let's get started!

Thank you for your feedback! Your daughter worked very hard in her Physics class and was always very prepared for our tutoring sessions. I really appreciate that. I am certain that her discipline and study skills will continue to bring her academic success in college and beyond!

Engaging and knowledgable tutor!

My daughter needed help to improve her comprehension and her performance for AP Physics I. Dan did a great job at engaging her in discussion of concepts and in working through problems in a way that really helped some challenging subjects really click for her. After working with Dan, she was much more confident going into a recent exam. We wish that we'd found him sooner!

"Best tutor on the planet"

My daughter had her first Physics session last night and I woke up to a great text: "I was just on with my physics tutor for almost 5 hours and he is literally the best tutor on the planet, I think. I have been in physics all year and I finally 'get' it. I never understood it before." Thank you to Dan for helping her study for her college final. I will be saving your contact information for when my son takes AP Physics next year.

Patient, Helpful, and Fun

Working with my Dan this past year has made all the difference in how I approached and understood physics. From the very beginning, he broke down complex concepts in a way that actually made sense to me. He didn’t just help me pass the class—he made me enjoy learning physics. Dan always made sure that I understood a topic before moving on to the next which helped me in the long run. Every session was not only informative but also fun. Whether it was preparing for a test, reviewing homework, or tackling AP-style questions, Dan always came with helpful tips, tricks, and plenty of practice problems. What stood out most was how thoughtful he was in explaining things—he adapted his teaching to fit how I learn best. His support made me feel confident and ready for every test. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better tutor! Thank you Dan! I highly recommend Dan for anyone who is looking for a tutor, especially for AP Physics 1.

Amazing physics tutor

Dan is not just knowledgeable in physics, his ability to connect with students is a great plus. My junior had struggled with physics 1 concepts initially, but after she started lessons with Dan she quickly got the grasp of the subject. Dan is also very efficient and flexible and my student never needed extra lessons in spite of her rigorous marching band and jazz schedule. She also found him quite funny!

Knowledgeable and Amazing Tutor!

Dan helped my daughter with Honors Physics. He got her through some of the really tough topics. He is patient, knowledgable and so caring. He explains things very clearly and is extremely reliable and flexible. He made every effort to accommodate, even at the last minute. We were so lucky to have his support this year! Dan, wish you could teach all the tough subjects!

Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for your kind words. I feel the three of us made a great team working our way forward through the (sometimes challenging!) world of Physics. I do teach a few other subjects, but there are also many fine tutors on Wyzant ready to help out. Best of luck to you both!

Excellent AP Physics Resource

Dan has consistently worked with my son for this entire school year as an AP Physics tutor. He has been a consistent name in our household and someone we often refer to friends. He is patient, incredibly thorough and able to break down complex concepts and help my son be incredibly successful in his AP Physics course this year. We will definitely use Dan for our younger son soon and can't say enough good things about how helpful Dan has been for our junior this year.

Patient and adaptable

Dan was patient with my daughter, giving her time to open up and feel comfortable to make mistakes in front of him, something that is very hard for her to do. He adapted to find her weaknesses and strengths and keep her engaged and learning the whole time.
