Hello, I’m Maxfield. I’ve spent years helping friends and classmates understand history through study groups and discussions. Even though I don’t have formal tutoring experience, I talk about history constantly because I love finding the connections between past and present, and I bring that same enthusiasm to helping students. I aim to make history fun, engaging, and relevant. Instead of just memorizing dates and names, students learn to see how events fit together — and why they matter....

Instead of just memorizing dates and names, students learn to see how events fit together — and why they matter.

While attending both public and private schools, I struggled and had difficulty engaging with the material. Following these difficulties, I began homeschooling in fourth grade and found value in smaller, more direct, or one on one education. While taking classes at a homeschool resource center, I discovered that education could be engaging and meaningful, and I thrived in Mock Trial, Model UN, and Ethics Bowl. At age 15 I began dual enrollment at Portland Community College, earning my high school diploma and associate’s degree by age 17. I graduated in June 2024 at age 20 with a BA in political science, cum laude and with departmental honors from the University of Oregon.

Since graduating I have been involved in local politics through volunteering, internships, and social groups. Beyond my academic and political work, I’m also a creative writer, developing a novel, a comic book, and a game modification involving alternative history, where I incorporate real people and events but twist them under new circumstances.

My passion for history and politics drives me to explore how the past shapes the present. I see history as an interconnected story, not just names and dates. I aim to make learning dynamic and relevant by helping students ask not just what happened, but why—and how those events still shape our world today. My goal is for students to not only improve their grades, but to develop genuine curiosity about how the world works.
