I have been teaching for the past 8 years. I taught high school English Language Arts in Georgia to 9th graders for three years. I value my three years teaching in that school because I learned how to think outside the box using the tools I am provided. The district did not provide a curriculum. In order to provide our students with a strong education, our school's staff created units around our state standards using Backwards Design for Learning while utilizing engaging texts and assignments.
For the past five years, I have been teaching middle school in Oregon. I spent the first two years teaching 8th grade English Language at a traditional middle school. After those two years, I moved to one of our districts' alternative programs that serves middle schoolers. It is a hybrid online school that has allowed me to expand upon the curriculum it provides, which has led to some unique learning opportunities for the students and myself. With student feedback, I have been able to create supports that help struggling learners access the curriculum and assignments. At this school, I have been able to strengthen my ability to serve all types of learners.
