My love of teaching comes from being the eldest child in my family of nine. I have six younger siblings, and I've lived my whole life teaching them what I know. I am a first generation American born Hmong daughter. My parents were both refugees from the Vietnam War. They have taught me how to appreciate everything that I have because they had nothing and have worked so hard so that my siblings and I are able to have a good life. Knowledge is one of those things I have learned to really appreciate and understand it's true value. I was blessed to have been born into an English speaking world, but it's not a luxury most of my aunts, uncles, and grandparents have. Growing up in with two cultures, my native Hmong culture and the American culture, I have an understanding of how important cultures are in relations to your education.
I have always loved the feeling of helping others learn. I have a Bachelor's degree in English, Sociology, and ESOL from George Fox University. I have worked as a teacher's assistant and tutored for George Fox University. I was a tutor for George Fox's English Learners Institute, also known as the international ESOL program. I have also always volunteering as reading buddies and tutoring all though junior and high school.
I specialize in English. I minored in ESOL and have a lot of experience in teaching English as a second language. I love working with people of different cultures and teaching them how to listen, speak, read, and write English with fluency and accuracy. I am also an English major, making my skills in reading and writing pretty proficient. My goal as a tutor is to listen and understand each and every one of my student's needs and help them excel in their studies. I challenge my students and will asses them from time to time to keep both them and I in check. I always encourage my students to ask questions because I believe that you cannot learn unless you seek knowledge.
