About Debra

Bio

I am a teacher at heart! I have over 40 years of experience, teaching from Pre-K to senior adults. I have my M.A. and am "ABD" in the field of Education and Curriculum. Most of my teaching has been in public schools (grades K-12) in the areas of ELL and Spanish, which I love. I am a teacher at heart! I have over 40 years of experience, teaching from Pre-K to senior adults. I have my M.A. and am "ABD" in the field of Education and Curriculum. Most of my teaching has been in public schools (grades K-12) in the areas of ELL and Spanish, which I love. During COVID, much of my teaching turned to on-line, which I still do with students one-on-one. However, I have also homeschooled and been part of a cooperative school. During those years, I have taught English, Reading, Oklahoma History, US History, Social Studies, World Cultures, and a smattering of other subjects. I really believe that "subjects" are interrelated and want students see those cross-connections. I have received several local, state, and national awards for outstanding teacher and educator.

I have traveled and taught English to students from other countries. I have also volunteered in Central America, teaching literacy skills to indigenous populations. I enjoy helping students get to their "I can do this!" moment and then working on their continued success. Like most teachers, I learn from my students as well as teach them. I am excited to meet new students now and watch them grow!

I am Oklahoma Certified K-12 specializing in ELA, reading, foreign language (Spanish and ESL), and Social Studies. I have also taught Oklahoma History and World Cultures for middle/high school grades. For over 10 years I taught at the University level--classes in Children's Lit, Language Teaching Methods, and ELL to international students. I have a M.A. degree, and completed all coursework for a PhD in Curriculum Studies and Language Teaching.

I have taught ELL students for over 30 years in grades 12-K. I love helping them discover their capabilities in another language. I also have over 10 years experience at the University level, teaching English to international students preparing for academic work.

My certification is in English (K-12) and also ELL (K-12, adults). I have had extensive experience working with students from many language backgrounds. Part of my teaching included grammar classes, as well as working on standardized tests such as ACT, TOEFL, and GED. I love languages---learning about them and helping others understand how they work. Being able to speak and read well are tremendous confidence boosters, as well as opening our eyes to new and interesting ways to view the world!

I have extensive years experience teaching in elementary through high school. For 7 years I owned and managed/taught Global Horizons/The Learning Center, LLC, -- a private homeschool and tutoring center. I also homeschooled children in grades 1-8 for 5 years. Currently I teach with Windermere Coalition, a cooperative group for homeschool students.

I am a certified teacher in ELL and Spanish K-12. I love working with students to help them "see" the world differently in a second (or third!) language. I have also taught at the university level and in community programs for adults. I have traveled in several countries, and have lived/worked in Mexico and Central America. Learning another language is a fantastic opportunity to unlock doors to new ways of thinking and living!

I have taught Middle School and High School students Oklahoma History, US History, and World Cultures (Social Studies). I also coached students to pass the state required Citzenship exam. Some of these classes were taught to ELL students, who were not proficient in English at the time, but learned the subject matter well with my approach to teaching.
