Hello, I am a teacher with almost 20 years of experience. I have taught children from ages 3 to 21 in Speech Therapy. After traveling to many different schools, as a Speech Therapist, I decided I wanted to stay at one school and be a classroom teacher. My first year I taught 7th and 8th Grade Language Arts and Literature. The next year the Superintendent moved me to 4th Grade. I loved that age group and stayed there for a while until we had a teacher retire and the Superintendent moved me again down to 1st Grade.
I stayed in First Grade for 5 years and absolutely loved it. Our testing scores were very high as I believe in old fashioned phonics and my students were reading rather quickly. They were so proud of their vocabulary skills and all the new words they could read. Later on, I transferred to the high school and worked with high school kids who were disadvantaged or behind in their work. I helped several kids get caught up and receive their high school diplomas. It was very rewarding because a lot of these high schoolers, I tutored, were giving up and some had resigned to simply drop out of school. You can imagine how thrilled they were to not only graduate, but to raise their letter grades as well.
After two years, the Superintendent, who was also my husband, saw a need for me to move to 5th and 6th Grade. There, I taught Language Arts and Writing. The Principal told me ,at that time, that my students had set a school record for the highest testing scores in writing!! I was thrilled. I loved teaching 5th and 6th grades and had to finally resign to become a caregiver to my Grandmother. After a couple of years, my Grandmother passed away and I went back and taught 1st Grade one last year...then my husband became sick. I had no choice but to stop teaching altogether to take care of him.
I would love the opportunity to be able to work with Children again and be able to help them in an area they feel weak in. I also love the flexibility of tutoring. It allows me the best of both worlds
