I hold two Master's degrees in History and spent five years as a teaching assistant for multiple courses at UC Santa Cruz, including subjects such as Japanese American History, Native American History, and basic World and US History. In this capacity, I would help my students, who were often college freshmen or sophomores, outside of the classroom by meeting with them to discuss and develop their paper topics, explore the assigned course readings, prepare for quizzes, midterms, and finals, and proofread drafts before submission.
When assisting my students with their writing, I would focus on how to help them develop and refine their arguments with strong thesis statements and evidence from primary sources. Additionally, I would help them with the structure of the paper itself, including understanding how to write proper introductions, have clear topic statements in their body paragraphs, and craft conclusions that wrap up their arguments in a logical manner. I have found many of my students struggled with these aspects of writing during the transition from high school to college, and focused on helping them develop the skills to write college level essays as a way to set them up for future success.
