I am a newly certified English teacher who genuinely loves learning in all areas. I have found I learn best when I can relate academic material to my own experiences and observations made in other contexts. I love it when those "light bulbs" flash across the faces of my students. My primary aims in planning lessons are incorporating personal interests and individual learning styles as much as possible. While that can be difficult in a classroom full of students, tutoring offers greater opportunity for such specialized instruction. The student and I are better situated to capitalize on strengths while addressing weaknesses more deliberately.
I also have more than a decade of experience as a newspaper reporter, copyeditor, editor and page designer. Plus, I have created advertising and promotional materials for my employers in a variety of sectors. As a result, I am more inclined to stress practical purposes of writing and developing quality content geared toward overarching goals.
I am certified in secondary English education for grades 5-12, but I also very much enjoy working with younger children.
I know everyone does not enjoy English as much as I do. However, I do strive to make this subject — all aspects of it — relevant to my students' lives.
