The students I work with daily range from ages 16-20; however, I have have experience tutoring students as young as 9 years old.
In college, I began to view science as a tool for exploring the world, rather than just another subject in school. This enlightenment helped me gain a strong appreciation and passion for science, and, in turn, a desire to teach science in a more exploratory way. My goal is to make science accessible for all students. I am skilled at breaking down a complex concept to its foundational level and then helping students build the concept back up in a way that makes sense to them. In my teaching and tutoring experiences, I have worked with students of varying academic standing and ability and learned to differentiate instruction to accommodate each student's needs.
I have 2 years of experience teaching science at the high school level. I provide individualized instruction for my students who need additional help in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science, and Environmental Science. In addition to my science teaching experience, I have research experience in ecology. My research background has helped me to develop a strong understanding of the nature of science, and, in turn, pass this understanding on to my students. My approach to science tutoring is to introduce the topic broadly to provide the student with a clear perspective of how it relates to other concepts, and then I break it down to the foundational level. I ask the student questions as I explain the concept to determine what knowledge they already have and what needs to be further broken down. Then, I allow the student to work through questions if applicable.
