Hi - my name is Tracy and I'm a Gifted Intervention Specialist certified in the state of Ohio to teach middle school mathematics and science - grades 4-9. Middle school is challenging enough without being frustrated with math. You don't have to be!

One of the things I enjoy most when working with students is to see their attitude towards math change. I've heard many students say, "I'm not good at math" or "I hate math". I strive to help students realize that is not the case -- everyone can be good in math and excel! Sometimes, it just takes a lot of practice and everyone learns math differently, so we have to find what works best for you. I'm really big into using real-life examples of where we find math, so expect that I will use things like Pringles cans and shoeboxes in solving problems involving geometry.

A little bit more about me: I also hold a Bachelor's in Biology and have been an educator for over fifteen years, working with grades 4-8, primarily. I am a licensed in Ohio, and teach accelerated mathematics in my own classroom during the day in 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. I also have three children aged 29, 26, and 21, so I know how life is for students :)

Through my teaching experience, I also have experience working with students with both learning and physical disabilities. I treat every student equally and strive to develop lessons for an integrated classroom. I am also a Gifted Intervention Specialist.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

One of the core skills in Algebra 1 is the ability to factor -- there are multiple ways to factor (trial and error, AC method, or via the quadratic formula). I can help with applying any of these strategies to help solve for the variable in question. Algebra 1 also involves acquiring solid translation skills when presented with word problems, particularly those involving rate/distance, investment and rate/work problems. I can help with deciphering the key language in word problems and in setting up equations, or systems of equations, to solve for the variable(s). Algebra 1 covers the spectrum of graphing linear and quadratic functions, e.g. calculating slope (rate of change) and non-linear curves (parabolas). I can help with all of the associated formulas and graphing techniques in solving these problems.

Elementary (K-6th)

I enjoy working with students to develop fundamental math skills and do so in a way that helps them develop connections to concrete models in their world. For instance, when teaching the concept of multiplication, I first leverage repeat addition by using everyday examples (five groups of three apples). I then extend students' understanding of tangible objects to pictorial representation of the problem (draw the five groups of three apples). Finally, I help them connect mathematical symbols to the pictures. In this process, students can more holistically experience math and know it applies to the real world. I also utilize TouchMath which is a proven sensory technique in helping students interact with math.

Excellent Tutor

Tracy has a broad knowledge of reading and comprehension, and has a way to explain to my son. This will definitely help with his expressive language skills. I truly appreciate all her hard work.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Tracy worked very well with both my 6th and 4th grade daughters. This was the first time for us to use a virtual tutor. Tracy was extremely patient, understanding and flexible to help them move forward with math over the last 3 months when school was let out due to COVID. My 6th grade daughter is now prepared to start Algebra 1 next year and 4th grade daughter is doing lessons at full year above her grade level. I highly recommend working with Tracy!
