Numbers fascinate me because they are cross-cultural. Math is amazing because "language barriers" are non-existent, yet the correct values to each problem remain consistent. My passion for Mathematics began as I dealt with my personal lack of understanding. When I was committed to understanding Math I began to see the beauty in the numbers. My passion for people and higher education urged me to become a tutor. As a work-study student, I was a tutor for Cuyahoga Community College. Not only tutoring primary-level students, but also tutoring peer-college students within Student Support Services TRiO Math department.
As an artist, I love creating art. Staring at a blank canvas, I, the artist can create anything my creativity desires to produce. The blank canvas provides the opportunity for the artist to choose. The artist can choose to produce similar work, add complexity, or even try something completely unfamiliar. By my second semester of college, I realized that creative writing is just as artistic as the art I can create with charcoal and an array of colors. Visual art appeals to the eye. Where as, creative writing appeals to the mind, and in turn, imagination is set free. Through imagination, words created can dance off the page and become real.
As a child, I promised myself that I would try to remember the struggles of being an intelligent, underestimated, undervalued and disempowered child. I remember the look of frustration on my educators faces as knowledge failed to be transferred to the student. Now, I understand that each individual learns with a unique style, hence, it emphasizes the benefit of developing a customized learning approach.
