With a passion for tutoring that began back in 2000, I have had the privilege of helping thousands of students of all ages, from 8 to 75, master new and challenging material. Whether it’s breaking down complex concepts for younger learners or providing detailed support for college students, my goal is always to help my students understand the material quickly and effectively. Over the past 25 years, I have successfully guided students in subjects ranging from mathematics and chemistry to Spanish to achieve their academic goals and score highly on the ACT, SAT, GRE, and AP exams.

I earned my BA in biology, chemistry, and mathematics from Manhattanville College, graduating with Summa Cum Laude honors, and later obtained my MS in Mathematics from New York University. Throughout my academic career, I was inspired by professors who highlighted the elegance of abstract concepts, particularly in math. Their clear explanations and encouragement shaped my own teaching style, which I now pass on to my students.

I take great pride in creating a relaxed learning environment where students feel supported and encouraged. My teaching approach is centered around breaking down complex ideas from different perspectives, ensuring that my students can grasp the material in a way that works best for them. I emphasize consistent practice, practice, and more practice, with a focus on understanding why formulas and processes work, rather than just memorizing them. My aim is to foster motivation, analytical thinking, and focus in my students, helping them build confidence and a deeper understanding at their own pace.

I’ve learned that patience and careful explanation can make all the difference in a student’s learning experience. My sessions are designed to help students feel less intimidated by the material, ultimately strengthening their comprehension and academic success. The personal satisfaction of seeing my students overcome challenges and master difficult concepts is what drives me in my work.

ACT Math

ACT Math

I was trained to tutor in ACT prep through my work as a former tutor and test prep instructor for StudyPoint, Inc. and The Princeton Review, Inc., respectively. Since then, I have developed my own approach and tutored several students independently in New York City and in Columbus, OH for the ACT. I have also successfully tutored students that wanted to gain admission as transfers from schools outside the United States. Depending on my students' strengths, schedule, and availability, I can develop individualized test prep sessions for those interested in preparing for the ACT, as a whole or just the math and science sections.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

As an experienced tutor and honor's math major, I am well acquainted with the material covered in algebra and prealgebra courses. I have also taught algebra I to adult students at career colleges and middle and future high school students in summer enrichment programs. We usually go over: arithmetic of real numbers; fractions, decimals, and percents and related word problems; exponents, powers, and roots; order of operations; functions; solving linear and quadratic equations; graphs of linear equations and their different forms, including slope-intercept, point-slope, and standard form; inequalities; systems of inequalities and equations; polynomial addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; and factoring in all of its forms.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

As an honors math major, I am well-acquainted with all levels of high school math. In particular, I can help Algebra 2 students with: graphs and solutions of linear and quadratic equations and inequalities; expressions, functions, and inequalities involving roots, ratios of polynomials, radicals, and complex fractions; factoring using theory of polynomials; conic sections; combinatorics; matrices; systems of equations and inequalities; inverse functions; and exponential and logarithmic functions and related problems. (Depending on the school, instructor, and level of the course, some of these topics may be taught later in an Algebra 3 or Precalculus course, which makes no significant difference in the end.)
Biology

Biology

I majored in biology and took several upper-level lab courses at my alma mater. In addition to Principles of Biology, which covers the basics of molecular and environmental branches, I took courses in biochemistry, molecular cell biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, invertebrate zoology, marine biology, and cell culture techniques. A few years have passed since I finished my biology research and decided to focus my graduate studies in pure mathematics, but I still find the material interesting. I can definitely help honors and introductory biology students focus their studies.
Calculus

Calculus

I have tutored students in Calculus I through IV (numbering systems vary over time from one institution to the next) at Manhattanville College, The City College of New York, Columbia University, New York University, Long Island University, The Ohio State University, and Columbus State Community College. I also tutor AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC students at local high schools. I can also help with advanced calculus and introductory real analysis courses, but I do ask that the students provide their professor's syllabus as well as the name of their textbook. That way I can see if there is any variation of notation or if topics are introduced in a very specific order that "must" be obeyed while the material is being presented for the first time.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have tutored college and AP chemistry students since 2005. I currently help advanced high school students in the Columbus area . Over the last few summers, I have also helped students at Colgate University, Long Island University, The Ohio State University, and Columbus State Community College with their coursework in general/introductory chemistry. Depending on demand, I can also help with organic chemistry.
Common Core

Common Core

I have helped students in Ohio pass their state tests in accordance with Common Core standards. From the OGT to the STAR tests and beyond, I go over practice tests provided by students and break down the key concepts they need to know following the methods and explanations that demonstrate full analytical comprehension of the fundamental concepts of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I've always enjoyed math because I found it challenging. If that's not your experience, that's perfectly okay. I am patient and will help you learn the material thoroughly if you put in the time and effort. Practice makes perfect. I've helped both younger and adult students learn these concepts. From addition of three-digit numbers to improper fractions and back to long division, it will all slowly makes sense, but it's a cumulative effect that takes discipline and consistency.
Geometry

Geometry

I enjoy helping students with geometrical proofs. You have to make sure each statement logically follows from those that precede it. Geometry is a great course in which students explore the concepts of congruency and similarity of figures in the plane as well as 3-dimensional space. We also get a chance to study problems related to distances, areas, and volumes while also learning about symmetry transformations. The properties of circles, quadrilaterals, and triangles are fascinating, and with plenty of practice problems, students learn to appreciate that fact as well.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have plenty of experience performing Gaussian elimination and calculating determinants. I also know how to find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix or linear transformation. I also have experience working with unitary, symmetric, skew-symmetric, and other types of matrices. Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization is a bit tedious, but it's doable. Working with the theoretical aspects of fields and vector spaces are actually my favorite aspects of this subject. I am familiar with some applications and the basic uses in coding theory. (Nonetheless, I currently don't have solid programming skills needed to help students interested in numerical analysis applications.)
Logic

Logic

As part of my math major requirements, I took an upper-level course in mathematical logic as an elective and got an A. I only lost a fraction of a point on a midterm for not citing a theorem from lecture; otherwise, I would have gotten perfect score in the class. I love constructing formal proofs using a first order language and predicate calculus. Deducing that a statement is true as a consequence of the rules of inference applied to a set of axioms is most entertaining. I doubt most students go beyond truth tables and naive set theory, but I can help them out with those as well.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have helped scores of middle schoolers, students in junior high, and even university and community college students with prealgebra in central Ohio. I have also tutored prealgebra students in Westchester County, NY and nearby Connecticut. Moreover, several of my students have now successfully completed honors algebra courses and beyond.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I work with students by covering all their gaps, and then, through practice, practice, and more practice, they eventually master the routine calculations, recognizing underlying patterns, and are able to solve a myriad of related problems. I can help students with analytic geometry; families of functions and their graphs; compositions of functions; inverse functions; polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions with applications to the physical and social sciences; trigonometry and its many applications; systems of equations and inequalities; sequences, induction, counting, and basic probability; matrices and determinants; partial fraction decomposition; vectors as well as their dot and cross products. Depending on the instructor, conic sections, basic statistics, and parametric and polar curves also get covered, but that's not an issue. Since these courses cover a lot of material in a relatively short amount of time, I encourage and help my students review regularly. Creating sample problem sheets and working on timed practice tests is very beneficial.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I worked as an SAT Prep instructor for The Princeton Review, Inc. as a junior and senior in college. I also helped several students in Westchester County, NY with their SAT Math Level I and II subject tests. Since then, I have moved to Ohio and have helped my students navigate through the new SAT. Most of my students just want to get a quick refresher before taking the exam, but those who need competitive scores for selective schools and scholarships regularly schedule several one-on-one sessions and work hard outside of lessons by going over the assignments I give them. This group of students have more to gain, and their dedication pays off as they normally score 700 or higher on the math sections of these standardized tests.
Spanish

Spanish

I am a native Spanish speaker who completed bilingual elementary and high school education in the Dominican Republic. I am completely fluent as I can read, write, and speak in Spanish. In terms of academic units in the US, I also scored 80/80 on the College Board CLEP exams in Spanish and earned 12 college credits equivalent to 4 semesters of introductory and intermediate Spanish necessary for my alma mater's general education requirements. In Ohio, I mainly tutor students from the Pickerington, Reynoldsburg, and Columbus high schools who are taking required foreign language courses. Some of my Ohio State math and science students also ask me for help if they need to take Spanish for one of their general education requirements. I have also helped adult learners in the area with their conversational Spanish skills for their trips to Peru and the Caribbean. In the past, I also translated legal and technical documents from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English. I have also worked with my own online students. These clients are usually seeking occasional conversational practice with emphasis on correct pronunciation and accent modification.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I enjoy the algebraic aspects of manipulating expressions with trigonometric functions. I love proving identities; ever since I took my first lessons in trigonometry in high school, I can't get enough of these types of problems. Since I took Calculus, Differential Equations, Complex Variables and Abstract Algebra later on, my fondness for trigonometry has not dwindled, but grown.
Yoga

Yoga

I completed my formal training for the Integrative Amrit Method (I AM) style of Yoga Nidra for both kids and adults of all ages. Additionally, I have guided participants one-on-one and in group sessions after having completed over 130+ hours in my own personal practice using the Amrit, Satyananda, iRest, and Rama styles of yoga nidra. Yoga nidra is a powerful sleep-based guided relaxation sequence that uses mindfulness and meditation techniques to systematically relieve stress and tension at all levels of our being. It gives us the opportunity to release nervous energy and get the deep rest needed to improve our focus and attention, regulate our emotions, dis-identify from stressful thought patterns, and face new challenges with a calm and confident demeanor. It is a tremendous boon to the usual study skill tips and tricks and can accelerate learning exponentially by helping us release all accumulated worries and anticipations of the mind as we enter deeper and deeper levels of restorative rest and relaxation. It is especially beneficial when done after waking up or in the evening as we are winding down. Recent neuroscience and psychological studies have shown how yoga nidra can also help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression while optimizing and improving the quality of our regular sleep. Ultimately, yoga nidra helps us achieve equanimity and inner tranquility, which will make studying and learning less onerous and more enjoyable.

Invested and Supportive Linear Algebra Tutor

I can’t recommend Stefano enough. From the very beginning of the semester, he was clearly invested in my success in linear algebra. Right away, he asked for my textbook, syllabus, and course materials so he could make sure everything he explained matched exactly with what I was learning in class. Throughout the semester, Stefano consistently tailored our sessions to my coursework and helped me actually understand the material instead of just going through the motions. He encouraged me to take the theorems seriously and helped me see how they connected, not only to the section we were on but also to earlier chapters when it made sense. That made a big difference in how I approached the textbook and built confidence in studying on my own. There were even times right before an exam when I really needed extended help, and Stefano was willing and able to meet for long sessions, even up to four hours. After each exam, he always checked in to see how I did, which meant a lot and showed that he genuinely cared. If you're looking for a tutor who really commits to your success, Stefano is that person!

I look forward to working with you as we continue to study eigenvalues and eigenvectors! :D

Incredible tutor!

Stefano was very instrumental in my sons success in college level calculus. My son is a very visual learner and Stefano made it easy for him to see using graphs and helpful tips. He also had many helpful tips about how to relieve the stressors that come along with college and calculus. Stefano worked diligently to make sure my son had complete understanding of each topic while encouraging him every bit of the way. He has an incredible gift in meeting students where they are and bringing them forward I highly recommend Stefano to all types of students!

Tutor responded:

Thank you so much, Shelly! It was my pleasure to help Clayton. We covered a lot of material in only 6 weeks, haha. I am grateful that Clayton let me know when he needed to take breaks after we had been working on derivatives and integrals for a few hours. Calculus, ✔️!

Knowledgeable and Helpful

My daughter is about to graduate high school this coming May. She was originally struggling with her first Chemistry class when I reached out to Stefano. She had never needed a tutor before, so she was reluctant to give it a try. She started working with Stefano in the fall and continued into the spring semester, receiving help in calculus. She usually met with Stefano about once a week. He was helpful in reviewing and answering any specific questions or problems she had about the material. He was patient, always on time, and very entertaining. Anyone struggling in AP or CCP courses should defiantly consider giving Stefano a try!

Tutor responded:

(Just noticed this response feature, lol.) Thank you so much! It was a pleasure working with Karli. I appreciated that she was always prepared and knew exactly what she wanted to work on first. It made tutoring go very smoothly and efficiently, especially when we worked on the grammatically-picky PDF assignments for her calculus class, hahaha.

Amazing

Stefano provided just the right amount of support and challenge. He's my go to for multiple advanced subjects. Highly recommend. Advanced placement chem and pre calculus.

Improved Algebra 2 Grade

Alex is doing very well working with Stefano. Algebra two grade has definitely improved. We are still having problems with Spanish 4, but that has more to do with Alex not being timely with turning work in and the teacher taking points off. Alex now has the attitude that he is just going to fail Spanish and there is nothing that we can do about it. I think he has unfortunately had some teachers that have not been able to pick up on his real needs and he has just slipped through the cracks. The public school systems is not perfect for all, and for Alex with Spanish this is the case, never the less, as I have said to him, we must get through this school year and try not to fail. He does not want to accept the fact that it does make a difference to get the homework turned in and turned in on time. Maybe Stefano could help him understand the importance of turning homework in on time, that it does make a difference.

Awesome, Amazing, Reliable, Patient, Personable!

There aren't enough words to describe how happy we are with Stefano as a tutor. My daughter recently used him for her college Calculus class and he exceeded our expectations. My daughter took Calculus over the summer and had never had Pre-Calculus, so she knew the class would be difficult. She was hoping for the required "C" in the class to get the transfer credit. Stefano was so encouraging and told her she could do better and was right! She got an "A" in the class thanks to him (and her hard work). Stefano was extremely patient and encouraging, which built her confidence. Not only did he know the material but more importantly, knew how to explain it to her in a way that she understood. I always received detailed feedback on the material they covered which explained her strengths as well as areas she needed to work on. Every time I contacted him, I heard back from him within an hour. It was obvious he genuinely cared and wasn't just doing this because it's his job. My daughter has used a lot of math tutors through the years and he is one of the best! I would highly recommend him.

Turned my son's school year around!

My son was struggling this year but was reluctant to get help. He was having trouble getting his work done and turned in on time. We finally convinced him to try tutoring. Stefano has done a wonderful job with our son. He was able to explain the concepts he needed to get through math and chemistry assignments. He is extremely patient and always on time. Our son has chronic health issues that make it difficult for him to concentrate. Stefano was very understanding and kind about this. Last semester without Stefano, our son was only able to get the minimum amount of work done to pass. With Stefano's help this semester, he turned in almost all of his second semester work, even in the subject that Stefano wasn't tutoring him in. Stefano helped him get back on track and have a far more successful end of the school year. It was a great relief and he couldn't have done it without Stefano's help. We highly recommend him and are so grateful that he was able to make such a difference for our son.
