I am a highly experienced COBOL developer, having a career that spans 40 years in IT development, all of it in COBOL, along with the related control and scripting languages specific to the platforms housing the COBOL applications.
Recently retired, I’d love to help the next generation learn this programming language. Much of my early career, nearly 27 years, was spent in the retail jewelry industry, where I was the IT manager for a mid-sized jewelry chain. In that time I designed, wrote, tested, documented, and deployed projects in virtually every aspect of a retail business—all in COBOL. For the next 15 years I worked for a national insurance company. During that time my COBOL skills were focused on the IBMi platform (formerly known as the AS/400 or iSeries). My experience has largely been on mid-sized systems, using both traditional COBOL file I/O and embedded SQL to a DB2 database. I specialized in analysis and creating internal tools for the COBOL development staff.
I’ve taught COBOL classes in a corporate setting, established programming standards, and assisted programmers new to the language. My teaching style is conversational, and I explain things as a coach and mentor. Let me help you as well.
In addition to in-person training, I’ve been the primary author of departmental wikis for COBOL team use, providing step-by-step instructions, background information, and documentation for software systems. I’ve also created training videos to supplement the written material.
