Hello! I have been a part-time tutor for more than a decade. I have tutored in several settings from public housing, public schools, and private schools as well as online.
Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a struggling or resistant learner become confident! I help kids with reading (decoding words), reading comprehension, and writing. It all starts with developing a connection with your child and understanding their learning style (audio, visual, kinesthetic or some combo) and learning their personality and interests. I adapt to their needs; a cookie-cutter approach often doesn’t work.

In addition to reading, I’ve also helped young kids with the writing process as well as high schoolers with college application essays. Happy to provide testimonials and references from parents and students.
My formal training was from the McLean School’s Tutor Training Institute (Lower School) where I became a certified tutor. The McLean School is a private college preparatory school that serves traditional learners and those with learning differences. Through this year-long program, I developed new skills and expertise through seminars and hands-on experience grounded in current research in educational intervention. We used games and other creative multi-sensory learning approaches to help struggling students. I worked with groups of children and intensively with one third grader in reading comprehension who achieved significant progress. Since then, I have tutored many other students who also became enthusiastic learners. I am also Orton Gillingham trained (a phonics-based methodology), which has been proven to benefit children with dyslexia and other reading disorders. I have a daughter and understand current academic expectations in both private and public schools. Also, I have been a professional writer and editor for more than 30 years.

ADHD

ADHD

I have worked with many students who have ADHD at the McLean School and have coached a family member who has ADHD. I have found that many kids with ADHD prefer hands-on learning. The hands-on methods I used to teach reading and writing lead to better engagement in the learning process. Teaching methods will adapt to the learning style of the student (visual, kinesthetic, tactile, and auditory) and address their specific challenges. Story maps and other pre-writing templates can make the writing process easier; audiorecordings and scribing can also assist with holding on to and expanding upon ideas. To address reading comprehension, artistic and visual children often enjoy drawing to visualize and maintain the main ideas in a story. Children with strong kinesthetic skills often enjoy acting out fiction and summarizing the main ideas. I can work with children in a variety of creative ways to enhance their learning and make it fun! Many kids with ADHD also have difficulties with executive functioning (initiating, planning, organizing, and following through with their work requirements). I can assist with systems for making these processes easier. Orton Gillingham trained.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I received a certificate for completing Orton Gillingham training, which is a multi-sensory proven approach to teaching children how to read. I tutored for one year in a private elementary school. In addition to this instruction, I received intensive weekly tutor training from the Head of the Lower School. Through these seminars, I learned additional evidence-based strategies for teaching reading, such as Rhyme to Read.

I have worked with students of all ages and abilities in phonics and reading comprehension. I have assisted individual students and groups in a private school third grade classroom. A significant part of the program included training with an internationally known educator on strategies that work. My goal is always to make reading fun and help my students become passionate about finding books that unlock new doors. Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Working with children of all ages, including my 15 year old who has struggled with reading and writing in the past, I have developed many strategies, based on the learning style of the child, to strengthen vocabulary. Online tools and print materials (roots and prefix study) are just a few ideas to help children expand vocabulary every day. Rounding out my tutoring experience, I have more than 25 years of experience as a professional writer and editor, helping adults in the corporate world polish presentations, proposals, speeches, reports, and training materials. Sentence by sentence, I ensure that the precise word is selected to fit the context, intent, and purpose of the publication.
Writing

Writing

I have a B.A. in literature and for more than 25 years, I have served as a consultant professional writer and editor for government agencies and private firms. I have also worked in a private school setting and in other tutoring situations where I have helped students with a variety of writing projects. I understand that facing a blank screen can be intimidating even for the most experienced writers. It doesn't have to be that way, though. The key to success in writing is thinking through your ideas, understanding your audience, organizing your thoughts well, and having a hook that captures the reader's interest.

Highly recommended! A+++

Beth started tutoring my grandson just 4 weeks ago and we're so grateful we found her! When he started lessons with Beth, he was well below his 1st grade reading level and was having difficulty with decoding and fluency. Even though my grandson was placed in 3 different reading groups a day in school, he was quickly falling behind. From the very first lesson, we saw improvement! Beth makes learning fun and uses multiple strategies, along with hands on sensory methods. His confidence has regained towards reading and looks forward to his lessons with Beth every week! Beth puts her heart into preparing for her students, making sure every lesson has something new and exciting. I highly recommend and thank Beth for everything she's doing to help my grandson. She truly cares and wants them to succeed!
