Hi! I'm Maddy, and I've been playing piano since I was five years old and singing ever since I can remember! My passion for music led me to pursue music education in college, where I completed extensive coursework and a student teaching experience focused on elementary and choral music instruction.

Throughout my teaching experiences, I have worked with students of varying ages, abilities, and learning styles. I believe that the best lessons are encouraging, engaging, and tailored to each individual student. My goal is to help students build confidence while developing a strong musical foundation.

I specialize in beginner piano instruction for children and new learners. Lessons focus on note reading, rhythm, technique, musical expression, and developing a lifelong enjoyment of music. I strive to create a positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and celebrating their progress.

As an educator, I understand that every student learns differently. I adapt lessons to meet each student's needs and welcome communication with parents to ensure students are supported both during lessons and in their practice at home.

I would love the opportunity to help your student begin their musical journey. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule a lesson!

Ear Training

Ear Training

My ear training and aural skills experience comes from college-level music study, where I completed structured coursework focused on developing listening and performance skills. This included weekly sight-singing and performance assessments, such as performing short, previously unseen duets with a partner based on randomly assigned musical material. I also completed dictation exercises involving rhythm, melody, and harmonic progressions, as well as listening tests where I identified chord progressions by ear. In addition to coursework, my experience singing in collegiate choral ensembles further strengthened my ear training. I developed strong listening skills related to pitch accuracy, blend, balance, diction, and tuning within an ensemble setting. This required constant awareness of both my own part and the surrounding voices, helping me develop a more refined and practical ear. These combined experiences strengthened my ability to recognize musical patterns, understand harmony, and connect what I hear with what I see in written music. I enjoy helping students build these same foundational listening skills, which support growth in piano, voice, and overall musicianship.
General Music

General Music

My general music background comes from my choral music education coursework at Liberty University, as well as my student teaching experience in both elementary and secondary music settings. During student teaching, I served as a general music teacher in an elementary school, working with students across all grade levels for a semester. In this role, I taught foundational music concepts through singing, movement, rhythm activities, and basic music literacy. I also completed a second student teaching placement as a choir teacher in a middle and high school setting. In this role, I directed choral ensembles and incorporated general music concepts into rehearsal instruction. This included teaching solfege, rhythm reading, notation, note values, and foundational theory concepts to support ensemble performance. I also focused heavily on ensemble skills such as blend, intonation, diction, vowel shaping, warm-ups, and developing a unified choral sound. These experiences, combined with my academic coursework, gave me a strong foundation in both music content and instructional practice. I enjoy helping students understand music in a way that is engaging, accessible, and connected to real performance experiences.
Piano

Piano

I began taking piano lessons in first grade and quickly developed a love for music. While living in Japan during elementary school, I studied with an accomplished pianist through the Suzuki method. Under her instruction, I developed strong musical foundations and began performing works by composers such as Beethoven and Chopin at a young age. After returning to the United States, I continued piano study and developed my music-reading skills alongside my performance abilities. In college, I tested out of the keyboard proficiency requirement and continued private piano study for three years while pursuing a degree in music education. I also participated in adjudications and focused on building strong fundamentals in technique, rhythm, expression, and effective practice habits. I especially enjoy playing expressive classical music such as Chopin and Debussy, and I also enjoy playing chords to accompany singing. These experiences have strengthened my understanding of how to break music down into manageable steps for learners. My goal is to create a patient, encouraging environment where young beginners can build confidence, develop strong musical foundations, and enjoy learning piano from the very beginning!
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

My background in music education included extensive study and performance in vocal music. Throughout college, I performed a variety of styles including opera, musical theater, choral music, and contemporary repertoire. I participated in opera productions, sang in one of my university's top chamber choirs, and studied vocal diction using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). In addition to performance experience, I completed coursework in ear training and aural skills, including sight-singing and harmonic listening. These experiences helped me develop strong musicianship, musical expression, and listening skills. I enjoy helping beginning singers build confidence and develop foundational musical skills in a positive and encouraging environment. My goal is to help students grow in their understanding of music while fostering a lifelong appreciation for singing and artistic expression.
