Reading and math competency is the basis of all other learning in life. It provides me with a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction to watch a child learn something new or finally understand a concept. Teaching an adult math or reading has as much enjoyment as teaching children. Adults are so excited that they have learned now to do math. I have had one adult dyslexic reading student that continued over a year in which the student made measurable progress with the learning disability. I used two methods of dyslexic reading assistance, the Ronald Davis method and Orton-Gillingham program.
Parents and Teachers are the starting place to tutoring a child in any of their basic school subjects. The tutor must be in active communication with the teacher about the specific existing reading or math levels of a student before planning a strategy. The use of the teachers' methods is highly important to the tutoring strategy. An extension of methods already in place would create less confusion to a student and an ease in rating the progress of and success of each student.
I believe a successful experience for the student should begin with a meeting of all concerned. I do not believe tutoring charges should extend to those meetings. Charges should only be in place for the actual student/tutor one-on-one time.
I have accumulated over 300 tutoring hours over a 3 year period. My experience has included tutoring several elementary students in general math through homework assistance. One student was a 7 yr old Chinese girl in math and English as second language. Also, I have tutored several freshmen college students in their remedial math class. My experience with volunteering was with 1st and 2nd graders reading at So. Lebanon Elementary School. Per the teacher's guidance, I spent 15-30 minutes with many students several times a week. I observed them read, correcting errors, tested their reading level and used word flash cards.
