Reading and math competency is the basis of all other learning in life. It provides me with a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction to watch a child learn something new or finally understand a concept.
Parents and Teachers are the starting place to tutoring a child in any of their basic school subjects. The tutor must be in active communication with the teacher about the specific existing reading or math levels of a student before planning a strategy. The use of the teachers' methods is highly important to the tutoring strategy. An extension of methods already in place would create less confusion to a student and an ease in rating the progress of and success of each student.
I believe a successful experience for the student should begin with a meeting of all concerned. I do not believe tutoring charges should extend to those meetings. Charges should only be in place for the actual student/tutor one-on-one time.
My experience has been tutoring one elementary student in general math through homework assistance. I have just completed 5 months tutoring a 7 yr old Chinese girl in math and English as second language. Also, I have tutored two freshmen college students in their remedial math class. My most recent experience has been volunteering with 1st and 2nd graders reading at So. Lebanon Elementary School. Per the teacher's guidance, I spent 15-30 minutes with many students several times a week. I observed them read, correcting errors, tested their reading level and used word flash cards.
My college education was as Math major, English and Accounting minors. I took Education classes for teaching math in grades 7th - 12th. The Student-Teaching internship for certification was not completed due to financial constraints. I, therefore, went in the Accounting direction as a career due to financial reasons. However, my first love has always been teaching. I am a retired Federal employee with Dept. of Defense (Accounting Tech.) and with IRS (Revenue Agent). Part-time work to supplement my retirement is my financial purpose in tutoring. However, the personal enjoyment it gives me along with a sense of fulfillment when the student advances in ability both make tutoring a joy and not a job.
My strategy is to first find the reading or math level of the student to determine where to begin. Using books at their level (from library and classroom) and above, listen and observe them read, and listen to them discuss the books' themes. Also use of flash word cards to work on their difficult words and definitions. After finding the student's math level and the teacher's method, observe the student practice either with homework problems and/or extra prepared problems from teacher or myself. Regular testing the progress is needed for reading and math to determine the student/tutor success.
I feel it is necessary to be flexible with session hours and only require 1 hour cancellation notice. Make up sessions can be scheduled easily. I am also flexible with my hourly fee with a family with financial needs and struggles. The location is flexible also, but should be quiet and comfortable for the child. I am willing to travel to place of parents choice or use my home, etc. Reading and math competency is the basis of all other learning in life. Hourly rate is per one student per hour. However, rate can be negotiated if needed. Group rates would be discussed and negotiated as well.
She is amazing with Ella. She is very prompt and professional. So calm and kind and very prepared for each lesson. Her knowledge of the subject is just right. Ella just loves her!
Patricia came to our first lesson fully prepared. Based on our previous conversations, she brought her own material that she thought would interest my daughter (animals). She took time to assess where her skills were at and gave her tasks to cover her weaknesses. It was great to see someone really try to help my daughter learn and not just force her to do her homework.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
