Although I'm not a licensed teacher, I've been teaching and instructing all of my career.

I began as a dance instructor, having had a long career as a professional ballet dancer. I taught a wide range of ages from the young 5 year old to the senior adults. Each age group taught me a great deal about compromise in teaching methodologies and adapting for your audience.

Once I began my second career in computer science, I found that training others was enjoyable and I became quite successful at both training and presentations of very technical material.

I have over 15 years experience in business analytics and SAS software. I also am qualified to teach any of the Microsoft Office Suite products -- Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Windows Operating System.

I'm looking forward to helping you help yourself !

Computer Science

Computer Science

I have a BS in Computer Science and an MS in the Management of Technology. I've worked as a Technology Manager for Corporate America for 25+ years in specific roles that include managing and performing Enterprise Business Intelligence, Data Analytics, and Data Warehousing.
General Computer

General Computer

I've been working with the Windows Operating System and most of the Windows applications that come with it (Explorer, Control Panel, Browsers, Music Players, CDs, USB ports, etc.) for the past 20 years. As well, I can greatly help with File and Document Organization, Printing, and Sharing. I can also extend Windows in general to the Microsoft Application Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). I have often taught General Computer Skills anywhere I work in order help office staff gain an ease of understanding in order to perform general tasks. I continually assist my neighbors with various tasks that are troublesome for them.
HTML

HTML

Prior to the abundance of tools that exist today to create web pages, many of them free on-line tools, I created web pages and web functionality from scratch. This was even without an html editor -- you learned the code, created the page, viewed it in a browser to see if worked! I've also worked extensively with application design programs that write the html and javascript code 'on-the-fly' while the program is running, generating html code that is specific to the particulars of the task at hand or particular database used. I can help with the most simple forms to some very complex forms of web page design.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I have used and developed in Excel since it's inception. As manager of Support Services for analytics for a team of Financial Analysts, our medium was Excel. It is the number one application used throughout most of corporate America, whether as an input or output of reporting needs. I have a good understanding of look-up tables, functions, formatting and pivot tables. I do not create Visual Basic script but understand how to debug it. With an application like Excel there is always something new to learn and always more than one way to get a task done. Let me help you get through the basics and many intermediate tasks.
Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook

I have used email systems for well over 20 years. As a technology analyst I have created programmable solutions to/from other software and systems in order to provide automation of messaging. As a business user I've made extensive use of scheduling, broadcasting, filtering, organizing and, of course, communication.
Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint

As a long-time manager in Corporate America, PowerPoint is a staple. I've created slide presentations for many audiences: Financial Forecasts for upper management; Training aids for student seminars; Operations results for all levels of management; and, have created dynamically generated presentations from databases. It's all in the message!
Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

I've been working with the Windows operating system and most of the Windows applications that come with it (Explorer, Control Panel, browsers, music players, CDs, USB ports, etc.) for the past 20 years. As well, I can greatly help with file and document organization, printing, and sharing. I can troubleshoot, research, and help resolve network connectivity, Wi-Fi and printer configurations. I can also assist to make the interface with the operating system easier to use and maintain.
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word has been the application leader in Corporate America for decades. I've used it for creating training documents for student seminars, Software and System documentation of process and configurations, internal and external communications, and complex documents with indexes and table of contents. Let me show you how to get the most out of Word.
Photography

Photography

I've always loved photography. In the early 80's, I took two years of classes in black & white photography, including much darkroom work. Currently, I'm taking seminars and classes for the DSLR and Photoshop and Lightroom. I am passionate in my endeavor to capture the beauty I see in architecture and nature. I like photographing dogs and children as well. I can easily teach a novice how to capture better images as well as how to process them in some of the free photo software programs.
SAS

SAS

As a SAS Administrator, Developer, and Trainer, I have over 20 years experience within Corporate America. My most recent role as Decision Support Systems manager ended in 2010 but I have continued to develop and practice my SAS skills through the present day. As an active SAS user and presenter, I won several Best Paper awards at the SAS International User Conferences. As a leader of our team in Decision Support, I supported up to 100 end users nationally who filled top analyst roles. I developed my fortune 500 company's first interactive business intelligence web site using SAS, HTML and JavaScript. I'm extremely passionate about the SAS Software System and know its strengths and weaknesses. My favorite moment is when a user or student replies, "Oh my gosh, I never knew my data was able to tell me that".

Excellent

She is a good teacher who listened to my wants, focused in how to accomplish them, and did so in a way that I was able to comprehend and learn. Those are amazing tasks for any tutor! She had insight, patience, and knew her subject! I am so thankful to have her help!

Patient and friendly!

My daughter is the average non-vocal 12 year-old and Karen took the time to get information out of that would help her become interested in possibly pursuing photography long term. She is looking forward to another lesson. Karen is a friendly and warm person! Thank a bunch, Karen.

Excellent tutor - I learn a lot at every session!

After several tutoring sessions with Karen, I am very pleased with her knowledge of the subject matter and her approach to tutoring. She is tutoring me on the subject of SAS software, and she has consistently demonstrated that she has expert knowledge of many SAS concepts, functions, and commands. Her approach to tutoring is very well-organized and she is pleasant to work with. She explains the subject matter in a way that is clear and concise while also being careful to engage the student's own analytic thought processes in achieving lesson objectives. So, the student is both well-guided and encouraged to develop their own abilities.
