About Rachel

Bio

Hi, I’m Rachel, and I have 20+ years of experience in higher education. I have three areas of expertise: Admissions, Writing, and Spanish.

If you’re a premed, you may recognize me as a co-founder of Mappd, the free platform for premed planning. I’ve moved on from Mappd and am now accepting students on an independent basis. The process of applying to medical school is long and rigorous, and I can help you break it down into concrete steps.

I have 20+ years of experience helping students navigate their paths through and to higher education. I started at The Princeton Review where I advised students and families on their goals for college and medical school as well as law, business, and graduate school. I then became an early founder at Next Step Test Prep (now Blueprint), specializing in helping students with the premed process, everything from choosing classes and making MCAT prep plans to choosing schools and applying to medical school.

I’ll also be available to help several more students with their application essays: personal statements, secondaries, and other essays as needed. I particularly enjoy helping students write their medical school application essays, which I see as a three part process: finding your stories, crafting the essays, and editing. I can help with any or all of the stages.

I have extensive experience helping students with college course papers in a wide range of subjects: English Literature and Writing, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Ohio State University with a degree in Spanish. I lived in Mexico as a teenager and studied abroad in Spain in college. I can help high school and college students get the focused instruction they need to succeed in Spanish class, and I can be a conversation partner to adults who need to improve their Spanish for their work or travels.

If you have questions about how I can help you, please feel free to reach out to me. I look forward to hearing from you!

College Counseling

College Counseling

My admissions experience started at The Princeton Review where I advised students and families on their goals for college and medical school as well as law, business, and graduate school. During that time we partnered with CollegeWise where I earned a College Admissions Counseling Certificate.
DAT (Dental)

DAT (Dental)

I've helped students with DAT prep and planning since 2001. I'm not available to teach and tutor the DAT itself, but I can help you make a good preparation plan or review how to try again if your first result was not at your goal. Beyond that, I help with the entire dental school admissions process. Wyzant doesn't offer a specialization in "Dental Admissions Counseling" subject so I am listing it here.
English

English

I have extensive experience helping students with college course papers in a wide range of subjects: English Literature and Writing, Humanities, and Social Sciences. I find that many students freeze up and tend to wait until the last minute to pour out their thoughts. If you’re in a bind and the paper is due soon, check my schedule to see if I’m available for a last-minute proof. If you’ve got a paper due a few weeks out, book me earlier if you can. My goal is to help you break down your paper into manageable parts: research, notes, drafting/writing, and finally proofing/editing.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I am a writing coach and essay editor specializing in helping students write clear, compelling essays for their medical school, grad school, and college applications. I've been helping student reach their application goals for over 20 years. I'm also available to help with college-level essays in English, the humanities, and social sciences. With application essays, students often struggle to write in the personal but not casual tone required. An application essay is not the same as a school paper, nor is it the same as a work of fiction. I'll help you identify what stories to tell and how to tell them in a way that helps your reader connect with you and understand you.
Grammar

Grammar

I have extensive experience helping students with college course papers in a wide range of subjects: English Literature and Writing, Humanities, and Social Sciences. These days, many grammar errors can be corrected by a free tool built into your word processing software, but they may miss some finer points of nuance and tone. Grammar should be invisible to the reader. As a writer, you want to make grammar choices that feel right to the reader without them noticing.
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

I've been helping students get into medical school for over 20 years. If you're lucky enough to get a medical school interview, it means the admissions office believes you have the right credentials to be a medical student and that you may be a fit for their school. Now you have a chance to let them get to know you better. Questions may review things discussed in your application or they may be about entirely different things. You need to be ready to talk comfortably on a wide range of topics without using scripts. Whether your interview is open or closed file, one-on-one or group, MMI or traditional, I can help!
MCAT

MCAT

I have been helping premeds on the path to medical school for 20+ years, and I was a co-founder of a free premed planning software. I’ve advised students through Medical School Headquarters, Next Step (Blueprint), and The Princeton Review. I can advise you on how to maximize your premed years and help you put forward your best self for your medical school application. Contact me for sessions on any of the following topics: MCAT Timeline and Preparation Planning Pre-med Requisite Courses GPA Calculation Planning Activities, Experiences, and Extracurriculars Finding Shadowing and Clinical (Patient Care) Opportunities Admissions Strategy/Timeline/Goals Application Readiness Assessment Re-Application Assessment Building Your School List Completing Your Primary for AMCAS, AACOMAS, and TMDSAS Essay Brainstorming, Reviewing, Editing Personal Statement Activities (Experiences) Essays Other Impactful/Disadvantaged Essay Texas (TX) Primary Essays Secondary/Supplemental Essays Interview Preparation/Mock Interviews Allopathic versus Osteopathic (MD v DO) Anything other part of your med school application or premed process
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I've been helping students with their educational admissions goals for over 20 years. The process has changed a lot in that time and changes a little every year, so I work to stay current with changes. I specialize in Medical School Admissions and can help with other Health Professional Schools, Graduate Schools, and College essays. For medical school applications, I can help with personal statements, activities essays, other primary application essays, and secondary essays, as well as interview prep and navigating waitlists and acceptances. For my process, for the first session at least I'd want to meet live. Later on, if you want to send me essays and pay me to do them on my own time, that is possible. But for the first session, I'll ask you to bring what you have. If you're at the beginning and need to brainstorm, we'll review your academic and extracurricular history and make a plan. If you have a draft already, we will review together in real- time. I typically do two passes, and the first is a quick pass of just 1-2 minutes. That is often all the time an admissions officer has to read the personal statement. This gives you the chance to get my feedback from a short, first impression. Then, we'll do a second, more in-depth pass where I offer notes and feedback, and I will ask you questions to clarify.
Proofreading

Proofreading

AI tools are great for playing by formal grammatical rules, but they miss the human element of writing for your audience. Where I can go further is with proofing for tone, clarity, and style that matches your needs. I offer serious and thoughtful feedback for your school paper, admissions essay, work presentation, or resumé.
Spanish

Spanish

*RATE NOTE: I charge $59 per hour for Spanish Tutoring. My regular rate of $149 per hour is for admissions advising.* I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Ohio State University with a degree in Spanish. I lived in Mexico as a teenager and studied abroad in Spain in college. I am lucky to have had a great mix of formal Spanish instruction and the immersion that comes with living in Spanish-speaking countries. I can help high school and college students get the focused instruction they need to succeed in Spanish class, and I can be a conversation partner to adults who need to improve Spanish for their work or travels.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Words are power. As you learn to use your power, you master clarity and connection in your communications. A great vocabulary does not always mean using the biggest word, nor the most obscure word. A great vocabulary means knowing what word works best for the point you want to make, and then using that word to make a connection. I've been helping folks with writing admissions essays for 20+ years and vocabulary is a foundational skill. I can help you learn new words and how to use them in sentences, or I can help you brush up a writing piece that feels a little too repititive.

Incredibly knowledgeable and a great med school resource

My son has just started working with Rachel and we could not be happier that we found her. She has a wealth of information and such an amazing resource with regards to the MCAT and medical school applications. Rachel’s guidance has helped my son become more confident and her positive and optimistic nature has helped eased some of his worries as he starts the medical school application journey. She has a lot of experience regarding how to study for the MCAT and she is even more versed on medical schools and the application process. Rachel is also very punctual, dependable, thorough and incredibly organized. She has literally been a God-send for my son and I could not recommend her more. We feel so much more at ease knowing that we have Rachel on our team!

Great Tutor for College Placement Exam

My daughter needed to brush up on her Spanish skills for her college placement exam. She hadn't taken Spanish class since her junior year. Rachel met with her several times and got her so well prepared that she passed out of 3 of 4 required semesters of Spanish in college! Rachel was patient, knowledgeable, flexible with appointment times, and my daughter really enjoyed working with her! I would highly recommend Rachel to anyone looking for a great tutor for any of their Spanish needs!

Awesome Tutor

I was thinking of submitting a review for Rachel at the end of my medical school application process, but I was so thankful that I wanted to write one now. Rachel is incredibly knowledgeable and on top of that she has given me so much information. In every session she is so organize and guides me step by steps on the process. Her inputs/comments & advice on my essay is exceptional. I was lucky to have found her. Still counting on more sessions with her until the application cycle is over.

Excellent teacher

Rachel has been absolutely outstanding. We’ve worked with many tutors on Wyzant across a range of subjects, but none compare to Rachel. She is not only exceptionally knowledgeable and patient, but also deeply committed to her students’ success. Rachel worked with our daughter in preparation for the AP Spanish exam, and she went above and beyond, creating a personalized, strategic study plan and consistently following up to ensure steady progress. Thanks to her support, our daughter felt confident and well-prepared. Even though our daughter has now completed her Spanish coursework, we plan to continue working with Rachel. Her dedication and effectiveness have truly set her apart, and it’s because of her that we’ve recommended Wyzant to many of our friends.

Great tutor!

I have only had one session so far, but I could tell from the first session that she was a great fit! She immediately provided me with helpful feedback and tools to improve my application. I look forward to working with her more.

Wonderful Spanish tutor for my college student

I wanted to send my appreciation to Rachel for her help with my college freshman. My daughter had a chance to place out of two beginner level Spanish classes and with only two years of high school Spanish notes, I didn’t feel that was sufficient. In just a couple of tutoring lessons, Rachel helped my daughter to remember and understand enough, and more importantly, to instill confidence and my daughter was able to successfully place out of the beginner level classes! A very big thank you to Rachel!
