Hi, my name is Jill K. I have been teaching for more than 10 years in various settings. I have taught from pre-k to 8th grade. I have taught overseas on the island of Saipan as well as Texas, PA, and various schools here in the Youngstown area. I enjoy teaching younger children because I like their eagerness for learning. I also like having fun with them by using puppets, stuffed animals, songs, etc. to aide in learning interest.

I have done tutoring off and on throughout the years. I have tutored kids in Kindergarten, children from Mexico, various Asian countries, and students of all ages. I feel that English Language Arts is my strong point in tutoring. I enjoy helping students to read and to improve their reading and comprehension skills. I love working with students 1 on 1 or in small groups because you can focus on their academic need so much better than in a classroom full of students.
I have had many experiences. I like to get to know the student's likes and dislikes to better relate to him/her. I try to have fun in teaching students as well by playing academic games.
As I have said earlier, I enjoy teaching reading concepts the best. I like to make stories come alive to students. I want students to know the parts of a story, what an author and illustrator does, etc. I want students to be able to retell a story in their own words. Learning new vocabulary is also important so students can understand what they are reading.
I have taught many phonics curriculums throughout my years. I feel I have a good understanding of the foundation of phonics and how to use it to teach children how to read. I feel the mechanics of phonics is crucial in a student's reading ability. If a student does not know how to put words together, then he or she will have a hard time reading.
If you are struggling in an area that you think I could help you with, I hope to hear from you!
