Welcome! My students call me Ms. Cole, and I help struggling readers learn to read, spell, and write with confidence.

I’m an Orton-Gillingham certified, structured multisensory literacy interventionist with a B.S. in Linguistics from Northeastern University, an M.Ed. in Children’s Literature and Literacies from the University of Glasgow, and an M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Kent.

Although I’m new to Wyzant, I’ve taught over 5,000 one-on-one literacy intervention sessions over the past 8 years, primarily online. I work most often with students ages 10–14, but I’ve taught younger learners, high school and college students, and adults (including an NFL player). Many students come to me with dyslexia or dysgraphia diagnoses, while others are bright, creative students who are frustrated by reading and spelling. I don’t diagnose, but I do assess skills and build a clear plan based on what the student shows me.

My approach is grounded in structured literacy and the science of reading. I teach reading (decoding) through spelling (encoding) using a systematic phonics scope and sequence that I adapt to each student. I also teach non-phonetic word study separately using multisensory techniques so students gain true mastery instead of guessing. All students solidify their reading and spelling foundation, while older students may also receive writing composition and Greek and Latin root study. The first session functions as an assessment to determine the right starting point, and for meaningful progress I typically recommend meeting at least twice weekly.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I’ve taught over 5,000 one-on-one tutoring hours over 8 years, and many of my students have ADHD alongside reading and spelling challenges. I use a highly structured, multisensory approach with clear routines, short targets, and frequent checks for understanding, which helps students stay engaged and experience success without overwhelm. I adapt pacing, lesson design, and materials for attention variability while still keeping instruction systematic and results-focused. Families can expect a calm, encouraging session that builds real skills and confidence while reducing frustration and shutdown.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Over the past 8 years, I’ve provided 5,000+ one-on-one tutoring hours supporting students with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Families often tell me they chose me because I’m patient and encouraging—especially after past tutoring experiences that felt rushed or impatient. My background is in linguistics and children's literature and literacies, as well as 15 years in Montessori education. I’m Orton-Gillingham certified and teach reading through spelling using structured, multisensory instruction so students learn the sound–spelling system in a way that sticks. I begin with an assessment to place the student accurately, then follow a systematic plan that’s adapted to the learner’s profile and school demands. Many students build measurable improvements in decoding, spelling, and writing fluency within 8–12 weeks when meeting twice weekly.
Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning

While my primary specialty is structured literacy (reading, spelling, and writing), executive functioning support becomes a natural part of my work with many students, especially in late elementary through high school. In sessions, I help students build practical systems for organizing materials, planning homework, breaking assignments into steps, and following through without overwhelm. I use clear routines, checklists, and “next-step” planning so students leave each lesson knowing exactly what to do between sessions. This support is especially helpful for students with ADHD or inconsistent work completion who need structure that feels calm and doable.
Phonics

Phonics

Phonics is my specialty, and for the past 8 years I’ve taught over 5,000 one-on-one tutoring hours helping students build accurate decoding and spelling through explicit, structured instruction. I’ve worked with students from early elementary through high school and college, as well as adults (including an NFL player), and I regularly support learners with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD. I’ve also supported students with autism, DiGeorge syndrome, and other chromosomal or medical differences, keeping sessions calm, structured, and skills-based while adapting pacing and communication as needed. Families often tell me they chose me because I’m patient and encouraging—especially after past tutoring experiences that felt rushed or impatient. I begin with an assessment and then teach the sound–spelling system step by step, alongside separate multisensory instruction for non-phonetic word study, so students stop guessing and gain true mastery. We also work on handwriting, if needed, and older students can explore writing composition and the study of Greek and Latin roots.
Reading

Reading

I’m a reading and spelling specialist with 8 years of experience and 5,000+ one-on-one tutoring hours, supporting students from elementary through high school, college, and occasionally adults. Families often tell me they chose me because I’m patient and encouraging—especially after past tutoring experiences that felt rushed or impatient. I work frequently with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD profiles, and I’ve also supported students with autism, DiGeorge syndrome, and other chromosomal or medical differences, keeping sessions calm, structured, and skills-based while adapting pacing and communication as needed. In my experience, many students who are labeled “comprehension” readers actually need stronger decoding and word-level automaticity, so I begin with an assessment and then teach reading through systematic phonics and separate non-phonetic word study to reduce guessing. With consistent sessions (I typically recommend twice weekly), families commonly see measurable gains in accuracy, fluency, and confidence within 8–12 weeks.
