Welcome! My students call me Ms. Cole, and I help struggling readers learn to read, spell, and write with confidence.
I’m an Orton-Gillingham certified, structured multisensory literacy interventionist with a B.S. in Linguistics from Northeastern University, an M.Ed. in Children’s Literature and Literacies from the University of Glasgow, and an M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Kent.
Although I’m new to Wyzant, I’ve taught over 5,000 one-on-one literacy intervention sessions over the past 8 years, primarily online. I work most often with students ages 10–14, but I’ve taught younger learners, high school and college students, and adults (including an NFL player). Many students come to me with dyslexia or dysgraphia diagnoses, while others are bright, creative students who are frustrated by reading and spelling. I don’t diagnose, but I do assess skills and build a clear plan based on what the student shows me.
My approach is grounded in structured literacy and the science of reading. I teach reading (decoding) through spelling (encoding) using a systematic phonics scope and sequence that I adapt to each student. I also teach non-phonetic word study separately using multisensory techniques so students gain true mastery instead of guessing. All students solidify their reading and spelling foundation, while older students may also receive writing composition and Greek and Latin root study. The first session functions as an assessment to determine the right starting point, and for meaningful progress I typically recommend meeting at least twice weekly.
