I have an undergraduate degree in Chemistry, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, and postdoctoral experience in Molecular/Cell Biology. I have used that training to serve almost 30 years as a university professor. I strive to bring deep subject-matter expertise in chemistry, biochemistry, nutrition, entrepreneurship and healthcare. My academic foundation is complemented by real-world consulting experience. This blend of rigorous education and applied science allows me to explain complex topics in ways that resonate with students at the high school and college level, particularly those pursuing pre-health or STEM tracks.

Throughout my career, I’ve advised and mentored over 500 students, helping them navigate coursework, research projects, and career decisions in science and healthcare. Whether in lecture halls, lab settings, or one-on-one advising sessions, I focus on building student confidence through clear explanations, structured support, and real-world relevance. Many of my advisees have successfully entered competitive graduate and professional programs thanks in part to personalized guidance on academic planning, test prep, and application strategies.

My communication skills have been sharpened through years of publishing, consulting, and teaching. I find this important at all levels, especially with younger learners who need foundational support as well as inspiration. I’m adept at breaking down abstract concepts, identifying student strengths, and fostering critical thinking. Whether tutoring a high school student in AP Chemistry or advising a college sophomore eyeing medical school, I bring clarity, encouragement, and the kind of insight that helps students thrive.

I have taught undergraduate one year and one semester biochemistry lecture and biochemistry lab courses since 1996. Additionally, my biochemical research has spanned protein structure-function, gene expression regulation, and protein-nucleic acid interactions.
Career Development

Career Development

With over two decades of experience as a professor at John Carroll University, I have developed and taught entrepreneurship courses alongside core science curricula, enabling me to guide students in applying scientific thinking to business innovation. My role as a mentor to hundreds of students includes coaching on academic, professional, and entrepreneurial pursuits, fostering critical thinking and strategic decision-making. Additionally, my consulting work and leadership roles in science-based startups offer real-world insights that enrich my ability to support college-level entrepreneurship students in bridging theory and practice.
Nutrition

Nutrition

I have published in the Annual Reviews of Nutrition on Iron metabolism as well as the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism on the Nutritional and Pharmacological Effects on Oxidative Stress in Soft Tissue and Bone Remodeling. I have reviewed research articles in the European Journal of Nutrition & Food Safety as well as I am a co-founder and CSO of a supplement company for dog, horse and human antioxidant formulations related to laminitis and diabetic complications.
Trombone

Trombone

I gave trombone lessons while in high school to middle schoolers. Then I gave lessons to high schoolers while I was in college. I also mentored other trombone players, and musicians in general, while I helped co-lead a jazz ensemble in St. Louis for several years.
