Bio

I hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and have more than 25 years of experience helping students understand mathematics. I am an Ohio Math Specialist and am certified in dyscalculia. I specialize in working with students who struggle with math, have gaps in their foundational understanding, or have lost confidence in their ability to be successful.

If your child can follow an example but gets stuck when the problem looks different, struggles with word problems, relies heavily on memorized steps, or says “I just don't get math,” I can help. I work to figure out what is getting in the way of your child's understanding and then provide targeted instruction to address those needs.

I don't believe tutoring should simply mean helping a student finish homework. I want students to understand what they are doing and why it works. I use visual models, drawings, examples, multiple strategies, discussion, and problem solving to help students make connections and develop a deeper understanding of mathematics.

I begin by looking at what a student already understands and identifying the gaps or misconceptions that may be getting in the way. From there, I tailor instruction to the student's needs and adjust as we see progress. Whether a student needs help with elementary foundations, Pre-Algebra, or Algebra 1, my goal is to help them become a more confident and independent mathematical thinker.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have more than 25 years of experience teaching and supporting students in mathematics, including extensive experience with Algebra 1 concepts and instruction. As a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and Ohio Math Specialist, I focus on helping students develop conceptual understanding of algebra rather than simply memorizing procedures. I work with students to identify and address gaps in foundational skills that can make Algebra 1 difficult, using visual representations, multiple strategies, mathematical reasoning, and problem solving to build understanding. My goal is to help students make sense of algebra, become more confident in their mathematical thinking, and apply what they learn to unfamiliar problems.
Common Core

Common Core

I have more than 25 years of experience teaching and supporting mathematics across elementary, middle, and high school settings, with extensive experience working with Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. As a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and Ohio Math Specialist, I have deep knowledge of the progression of mathematical concepts and the expectations within the standards across grade levels. My work emphasizes conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and the Standards for Mathematical Practice rather than simply procedural fluency. I use standards-based instruction and assessment to identify student needs, address gaps in foundational understanding, and help students develop the confidence and flexibility to apply mathematics in new situations.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have more than 25 years of experience teaching and supporting students in elementary mathematics, with a particular focus on building strong foundational skills and mathematical understanding. As a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and Ohio Math Specialist, I have extensive knowledge of elementary mathematics content, standards, and the progression of concepts across grade levels. I help students identify and address gaps in areas such as number sense, place value, operations, fractions, problem solving, and mathematical reasoning through individualized, hands-on, and visual approaches. My goal is to help students understand why mathematics works, develop flexible strategies for solving problems, and build the confidence they need to become successful mathematicians.
Geometry

Geometry

I have more than 25 years of experience teaching and supporting students in mathematics, including extensive experience with geometry concepts and instruction. As a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and Ohio Math Specialist, I focus on helping students develop conceptual understanding of geometry rather than simply memorizing formulas and procedures. I help students make sense of topics such as area, perimeter, volume, transformations, angles, congruence, similarity, and geometric relationships using visual representations, hands-on models, diagrams, and multiple strategies. My goal is to help students develop strong spatial reasoning and confidence in explaining and applying their geometric thinking.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have more than 25 years of experience teaching and supporting students in mathematics, including extensive experience helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. As a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and Ohio Math Specialist, I have a strong understanding of how students transition from arithmetic to algebraic thinking and where misconceptions and foundational gaps can interfere with that transition. I help students build understanding of topics such as integers, fractions, ratios and proportions, expressions, equations, patterns, and proportional reasoning using visual representations, multiple strategies, and meaningful connections between concepts. My goal is to help students develop the confidence and mathematical reasoning they need to approach Algebra 1 successfully.
